Jeffs trial

OK, it is making me sick.

Sentences like:

"Oh, she was unhappy about being married to her cousin, but that is not the same as being raped."

For God's sake!

She was a child! And even if she were 18, so what?

No means no. Surely if one is getting married.

I am so pissed right now.

EDIT: a link

This is only one girl. This man led hundreds.

I didn't follow the link as I am aware of the case and have already formed somewhat of an opinion. You won't like it, but I doubt I could be disliked more on this forum regardless...soo...

I have little to no respect for any religion, just to get that out of the way.

Nor do I have much respect for the rabid feminists whose only answer to what they ultimately want, is MORE!

There has been a flurry in the past few years of women teachers in schools boinking underage boys.

This whole age thing, age of consent, be it 18 or 16, also leaves me uneasy about societal trends.

Nor am I opposed in any way for equal treatment under the law of all individuals regardless of gender or ethnic origins.

However...let us peruse history for just a moment to gain some small perspective.

In some States with parental permission girls could marry at age 16,14, and even 12 years of age, that may have changed now, if so, it is recent.

In much of the world, then and now, families arranged marriages for their children as a matter of tradition and convention.

In many areas the 'church' has and does, sanctify such behavior.

I found it barely tolerable to live with one woman for any appreciable amount of time and insane to wish to have more than one wife.

Much as this Jeff's character is a member, although a member of a splinter group that challenges the modernization of the LDS religion, that entire faith, once upon a time had a traditional of multiple wives and very young marriages.

Thus, all this feigned outrage over a forced marriage of a fourteen year old girl, is, I think, much ado about nothing. It has been practiced in many places throughout history and I imagine in some Muslim nations, is still in practice.

Well, at least you have one post on your thread...hope you appreciate it.

Amicus...

there wiil be defenders of jeffs, and there have been. one woman testified that he had her marriage dissolved when it wasn't working.

girls 10-14 are pressured by family and ministers/priests; this occurs in numerous countries. indeed it might be mentioned that *mothers* pressure the girls also.

jeffs is despicable, and dishonest and has stashed millions; but his "crime" is pretty commonplace; he's a bit more flagrant than most *in the US*.

"pressure" otherwise know as psychological coercion, emotional blackmail, intimidation, threats of exile, are pretty widely used on kids, esp. girls. think of a raped 14 year old whose priest and parents tell her she must carry the pregnancy to term. (something amicus would surely approve of).

incidentally, physical threats too are pretty common in our world,e.g. Jordan. "We will kill you if you see that fellow again." pretty straighforward.

it might be mentioned that the NONradical feminists lost a big battle in the states, over the equal rights amendment. the idea of constitutional equality of gender rubbed too many Christians and backward atheists l(amicus), the wrong way. thus puts the US behind many other western countries. Consider the small number of women in the US Senate; 16, including outstanding persons such as Snowr, Boxer, Clinton, McCaskill. Perhaps the US's bad rep is a reason for the trial; to show that somebody cares. (ha!)

nonradical feminists, i.e., the mainstream ones, as in the Democratic party and the remaining tiny segment of progressive republicans, stand to lose more, as they have over the last decade. fascists, be they of Falwell or Amicus' stripe, are having their day in the sun.

the issue is simply authority. rather than a President, the US has a commander in chief, who can treat the native soil as a battlefield. all those who worship at the feet of arbitrary authority--which just happens to be male--are much encouraged these days; right evangelicals like Dobson, conservative Catholics, and moralizing atheists like Amicus. All Hail the Chief!

Can we not move them back out of the sun, then? Back beneath that rock?

People sit still for this stuff, and I mean the ones that don't like it. They just take it. It leaves me gasping sometimes, how much degradation people will just... endure.

Don Juan said:
There are limits to what a mule or an ass will stand; but Man will suffer himself to be degraded until his vileness becomes so loathsome to his oppressors that they themselves are forced to reform it.

i read you, can't

but didn't i just read a story of Dobson pronouncing that Fred Thompson, a kind of lapsed Xtian, did not go to church often enough.

i think most of the religious right, has 'seen through' Bush and is determined to get much more. that's 20-30 percent of voters looking for a leader. who will it be? brownback? huckabee?

until the war and anti terrorist hysteria abates (will it? re read 1984), few Americans are going to stand up to the Commander in Chief and his staff.
