What is the real reason JC Watts is quitting? I'm very sorry to see him leave. I haven't found the "real" reason why he's retiring at such a young age from such a good position where he could do a lot for the country.

he says it is to spend more time with his family, but rumor has it its over the Beltway back biting...damn, I liked that guy also. One of the few politicians I actually had an ounce of respect for. He'd made a great president

I think he needed a few more years of high-profile leadership and he'd have been a great candidate for President. Maybe someone will talk him out of it.

He does a great job of keeping the Republicans thinking about important domestic issues. His voice was loud and clear for many issues important to us, particularly equal opportunity and inclusiveness.

One would have to speculate that it was more than just "backbiting" though. After all, the guys been in the middle of a hot malestrom of political storm for many years now. I wonder it there's something more?

He's from Oklahoma...that says enough right there. They tend to take two steps forward and about three back all the time.

He'll probably be back.

Istook on the other hand...he's flat scary.

We send them to Washington to get them out of our hair. Y'all want Keating?

I have wonderd the same, but it will up to him to say what really went down. It might just be he was being turned into one of them and hated what was happening...something I would respect even more.

As an Oklahoman living in Watts district, I am elated that he decoded not to run. You may all think he is a great politican but he did very little for the people he represented. He was always too busy trying to further his career nationally to remember the people that elected him. I think what finally came down is that his fellow republicans got to know him just as we have here in Oklahoma and none of his peers had that much use for him. The all me and no you bit him on the ass and he decided it was time to leave town while he could still say he was on top. If any of you posters that think he was great would like him to represent you I will gladly go help him start packing first thing in the morning.

Thanks for your comments. Being from his home district, you'd know more about his effectiveness than most of us. That's too bad, did he not bring projects or money back to the area?

I don't know, but it is a shame. The Republicans need more people like him, for pure politics' sake and otherwise. Before September 11 and the ensuing political resurgence of Rudy Giuliani, I was predicting a Bush/Watts presidential ticket for '04.

At the same time, perhaps he feels that it would be better to retire as the highest-ranking black Republican in history than to risk going for more and losing.

Or maybe he is just really sick of Washington and politics and wants to go back to his family.

Who knows.

there's always something more. always.

After a while I 'd get tired of people pointing at me and saying, "Look, he's black..."

-or-

...maybe he wasn't getting stock tips like the others, so he needed a day job...

-or-

...he was such a pain in the ass that nobody wanted to work with him anymore and he could see the handwriting on the wall...

-and finally-

...my wife and kids don't spend 24 hours a day figuring out out to tear me down and portray me as an evil person.
