JazCullens Characters

Sr, I didn't know what you meant with your first comment. It was vague, and I thought you were accusing the op of being an alt. I was also referring to lovecraft. And yes, I should have used names. It was spineless and hypocritical of me not to.

As for ginning up controversy, I felt pity or sympathy or empathy or some other emotion I can't name right now when I first read the comments. I waited, it didn't go away, so I posted. I stand by what I said.

I agree that this isn't the place for the discussion of an author's work, good or bad.
EDIT: Though I just realized that I did this in my earlier post. Damn. My bad.

SR -- if you're going to put an idea like alts out there, you have to be ready to defend if someone calls you on it. I'm not b/c I've corresponded with and done a little beta reading for Jaz and I don't think she has alts.
He didn't argue that "virgo" there was an alt. He said that Jaz's fans--like Virgo--were out and promoting her. Which is fine, and I grant that Virgo likely didn't mean to post such a thread here, in Author's hangout, but that mistake still came across the wrong way.

The discussion did quickly go away from JC's work to the current dissatisfaction among some who don't like the current romantic version of vampires and weres. No problem. But a lot of that was a direct back lash to Jaz's stuff.
Of course it was. Because Jaz writes that sort, and this thread is about what she writes, and so she got stuck as "whipping girl" to the discontent of those who hate the wimpy vamp types (like Rice). Which is yet another reason that this thread is, regrettably for the OP, in the wrong place.

We're authors and even with writing that is good fun to read, we can and will be critical. We are examining writing from the inside. It's rather like starting a thread on a wine cooler among professional wine tasters. If you just said, "how do you like sexy vampires?" then we'd discuss it in general and not take aim at Jaz. But if you say, "How do you like Jaz's sexy vampires" then you're making her a target for everyone's discontent over the sexy vamp movement. She becomes emblematic of it and all that's wrong with it. She stops being any old writer who writes such stuff and would not be targeted if her name hadn't been mentioned in particular.

Fine. I haven't been thinking alt myself. For truth, I've been thinking unsophisticated teenybopper fan club brushing aside erotica on an erotica site. Lots of readers and pom-pom swishers (hence the oversell), yes, but not particularly relevant to what the site is about. Usurpers of the focus here--and in this case (yes, probably innocently) coming straight to the other authors here and suggesting we should be worshipping the teritiary niche too.

I agree with Tatiana to a degree as in with Jaz hersekf not in this thread it is beginning to reek of back stabbing. I never insinuated Jaz herself has alts or would encourage fans to do so. However sometimes the fans themselves take it upon themselves to do it to "help". I recently found out through a member I "chat" with from time to time about my stories that he created a half a dozen alts to vote for his favorite author's every story. Maybe those get trolle out who knows but I know the other author didn't ask for it.
But to go along with something SR stated the "teeny bopper audience" could play in. Then again if someone follows you the ywill start giving you 5's no matter what you put down they are your fans. My stories scores have gotten slightly higher as the chpaters go up but views votes are down a bit so the high scores only relfect my "core" audience. So I try to use the votes of my first 10 or so chapters to gage where I really think the series is.
I think Jaz is a good writer I just do not like the genre. If you don;t like the topic it doesn't matter the skill of the writer. I said up there that I am sick of the vampire "genre" I did not say Jaz is a shitty wroter or that i was sick of her.

No Brian Lumley is a horror writer he has written a bunch of books under the "Necroscope" series their was a series of 5 which were mind blowing and a follow up trilogy that was equally good unfortunately the stuff after that is a bit stale.

Could have used a spoiler alert, lovecraft. I have some Lumley books sitting on my shelf that I yet to start reading.

My first question is -- what would be a good book to start with for Lumley?

Second -- I don't see how lc's statement is a spoiler. It was more of a critique, or an assessment. Spoilers are when people say what happens in the book. He just said he thought they fell off in quality.

Penny, out of deference to other readers, I didn't quote the part of lovecraft's post with the spoilers.

My guess is the best place to start is with the original trilogy. I'm missing the first book, which is why I haven't read any, yet.

Ok. I looked Lumley up on Amazon but wasn't sure about order. I'll figure it out. I have a credit there, and a Kindle, so...might as well. :)

I am so sorry to the ones that I offended. If I could take down this post I would, I only put it here the others you suggest weren't to busy, and I thought Jaz's fans would probably see this. Although I do like Jaz's work and shes very talented, she isn't my only favorite author, if you guys look at my profile you would see that. If this post upsets any authors out there please take it down, my feelings will not be hurt.

No problem; don't worry about it. There was nothing wrong with the content of your posting. If you haven't done so already, you could post it to the "Story Feedback" forum, where other readers of JazCullen might see it and respond.

But even there, if you open up a discussion of her writing/stories, you're likely to get the full spectrum of responses.

Harry Keough Necroscope is the first. The original series was meant to be a trilogy but he added 2 more and the 5th is still the best it shows the alternate reality where the Vampires come from they have a feudal type society and are always warring with each other it also tells their history an amazing book.

Well that of course is my opinion you may find them all just as good. I also read them in a slew so maybe I burned out fast.

No worries you never offended anyone. This is what happens here. No matter how a thread starts it breaks off into tangents and debates by the end nobody even remembers where they started.

Fads and Fans

My exposure to the literary vampire "fad" goes back about...erm...twenty years. Somehow I have a hard time labeling something a fad when it has shown that kind of staying power.

I would not be quick to label her fans as teeny-boppers, either. I've been pretty surprised at the demographic spread of people who've listed me as a favorite (and pleasantly so). I would be shocked if her experience wasn't similar.

I have spoken with Jaz over teh interwebz much moreso than I have read her work. She's bright, she's earnest, she's friendly, she's helpful and she's not nearly as defensive or hyper-competitive as several of her detractors. She has also taken the time to communicate with her fans. That alone makes a huge difference.

Honestly, I think she's gonna destroy me and probably much of the rest of the competition in the "best of" stuff for 2010, and more power to her. She has the talent and she has done the work.

I had read your stories too and I found them quite enjoyable. I really loved the last chapter where Alex Lorelei, and Rachel finally hooked up together. Rachel was my fav and I was hoping you were going to something with her.

Hey! Watch with the spoilers!!

All,

Virgochild's well-meaning post implies things that happen very differently in the story. By "hook up," the story ends with the three main characters going tandem skydiving...

(sssshhh!!!)

I have a character in the "sexiest male" competition. This is my first year writing so not sure I understand the rules right but I think the top 4 nominees make it to the final. A rough count through the thread has my character making it against 3 of hers. My only chance is they don't unite around one in particular! Hey Virgo You said you read my series as well as Jaz can I sway you to the human side?;)

Well regardless of which, will you post another series or story, maybe with Rachel in it.

I will hopefully post something new soon, but I've just recently finished a household move. I'm currently just a touch drained of energy. :)

I have several different stories with the opening chapters half-finished. When I get one done, I'll post it. Sadly, none are Alex/Lorelei/Rachel stories, but I'm sure I'll return to them before long.

Of course you can after all I am human, and plus the chapters of your story that I read were awesome. I can't remember what chapter it was but, I really like the scene where Mark finally gets revenge on his abusive foster father.

Thank you. Lex Talionis Chapter 5 is the mark Max showedown. I have to tell you the entire Lex series was never meant for a "sex site" the original had very little erotica. Since SWB was doing okay I decided to give Lex a shot I sexed it up but was worried it was to violent by the time I got to Chapter five I was then wondering if it was violent enough as people were e-mailing me left and right telling me how bad they wanted to see max get it. Violent crowd these "perverts":D

Necroscope

House of Doors is a nice little horror book if you're put off by a multi-volume series.

One of his collections of short stories. I think Fruiting Bodies won some awards, but I've only read the title story.

You know, the funny thing is, I checked Amazon's Kindle store and although they have a number of Lumley books, they don't appear to have just Necrosocope. They may have had the other.

Blegh! What a mess. Trying to navigate Amazon's horror of a web page makes me want to put my head through the screen on occasion.

It's not been kindle-ised. Could be a rights issue, could be old dinosaur of a publishing company not having a clue. I'm tempted to go with the latter as anyone trying to get at his work from kindle only gets the options of sequels or spin offs. Not too helpful.

Out of that mess I'd probably go for the short story collections "Beneath the Moors" or "The Whisperer", but they're a bit pricey at $9.99. I think they're more heavy on HPL Cthulhu themes rather than vampires though.
