Jason Giambi: $18,000,000 / year to wear pinstripes

If he saves all his money for four years, he would have enough to buy the mayor's office from Bloomberg

Well, CumSluts are curious too.

I think Giambi is worth the money to the Yankees, lets face it, they have more money than they spend. To other teams it would probably not be worth it.

Giambi is a great hitter, he hits for a high average, walks alot and provides power and RBI production in the middle of the order. His clubhouse leadership skills are an important consideration, he is not the arrogant prick that A-Rod comes off as.

Haveing said that, he has some major weaknesses that may come into play as time goes on. His defense is borderline awful, limited range at 1st and not a particularly great glove man. I would expect more infield errors with him at first base. Once age takes hold, I would expect him to often be a DH, thats alot of money for a DH.

He has no speed, I mean NO speed. The Yankees made speed and baserunning a significant part of their offense last year(Because they had little else in the way of scoring ability). In the #3 or 4 spot, he is a stone. Eliminates flexibility in the middle of the lineup when he clogs the bases. On some teams this wouldnt matter, as they play base to base, on the Yankees it may be a problem.

I absolutely despise the Yankees. But if I was Brian Cashman I would make the deal, it is not that great a risk for them financially and he is a draw for Steinbrenner's impending cable venture. I am assuming they have a plan for what to do with Nick Johnson, their 1st base prospect, it certainly figures into the overall value of the deal.

Great analysis, Mouse. I agree with everything you said, except that I love the Yanks. I grew up in NY and they're a great home-town team.

I believe that the plan is to alternate Giambi and Johnson between DH and 1st base for now. Eventually Giambi will be full-time at DH with Johnson at 1st. The Yanks just won't tolerate Giambi's poor defense. I'm guessing that they'll have Don Mattingly work with him on defense. They should also have Yogi Berra work with Jorge Posada.

Cumslut, are you a Yankees fan? Has the deal been signed?

No, just a universal student of the game. The deal hasn't been signed because Giambi still has to undergo a physical.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Not a mother f'n Yankee!

This sucks.

But Giambi... He seems worth it now, but he'll get hurt or he just won't do it.

It sounds like the signing will happen soon. I didn't know that they had reached any agreement, or that Giambi had decided to sign with the Yanks.

BTW, your new av is sexy as hell! Congrats on reaching 100 posts.

Thank you...Likewise.

Nope

None of them are worth it. I don't mind them getting all they can, it is a free market. I can't believe people will actually pay the exorbitant prices to go see them play a game. I would rather go out and play myself or watch the local high school kids play.

Bud Selig is going before Congress to plead MLB's case for continuing to need their antitrust exemption. Says they have lost over a billion in the past seven years...maybe the skyrocketing salaries you are paying have something to do with it.

To the owners..take a bit of advice from Nancy Reagan....

"Just Say No"

One baseball player cannot take a team to the World Series....find 10 or 15 capable solid players and you have a better chance than with one or two superstars and a bunch of hacks.

I may attend a game someday....if I get free tickets.

As we say in New York,

Oh no, Yogi is a damn Yankee fan!

<insert pukeing smilie here>
EAT YOUR HEART OUT, SUCKER!!!!!!!

(I don't get it ... you're usually such a good guy, Mouse.)

A very good deal. Seven years, $128 million is worthy of a league MVP who's entering the prime of his career. Jason Giambi will be 31 next year and 37 at the end of the contract. Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs this year, at age 37.

Giambi will play first base for the Yankees. He's a left-handed power hitter in a stadium designed specifically for the original left-handed power hitter--Babe Ruth.

Oakland had Giambi signed in March. Six years, $90 million was accepted but the Athletics balked at Giambi's demand for a no-trade clause. By the time, Oakland agreed to it, New York and St. Louis were in the picture and it was too little, too late.

fuck the yankees

I am a life long, well since they've been around, Mariner fan..
We hate the fuckin' Spankees.....
Perhaps that is due to the fact they have kept us out of the series 2 years straight.....Ya think?
Its all good....... George has always bought and paid for a great team........
It could be worse. ie. RedSox.....Ha Ha Ha and BTW get over Buckner OK? Jesus H. Christ.
Gotta love the hot stove league.

In answer to your query: Giambi is the shit. He is the real deal.
Hope he breaks his fuckin' leg 'er somethin'......no I don't really. He is an asset to any team.. I'd love to see him in an M's uniform.
Peace Out,
David
