It would be nice if someone has some answers for me.

I'm going to finally get wireless internet in my house. And quite frankly, I don't understand how it works, what I should ask for, is it the same thing as DSL, is it different than cable? Will it cost more to have multiple computers on this system?

I have no clue what I'm asking for and how to go about finding the right service and stuff.

All I know is what I want: I want to be able to get online and navigate the web faster than I do now and I want to be able to use my computer in any room in my house without a bunch of cables and wires to drag along and I want to be able to have all my computers on this service. (I have 3, counting my daughter's Dell.)

Any advice would be helpful.

lol, the kind if wireless I have, it's just a cable internet connection put into a wireless router. I'm quite certain that you can have any kind of internet connection with the kind of router we have, it's no faster, but depending on what kind of recievers you have it can be far less stable, mine isn't very good and it's a ways away from the router so it's quite unstable. If you want something faster, check out what packages your ISP offers.

Beats me. Things are so backwards here, my internet works by pony express. You might want to cross post on "How to"

I want, I want, I want......it's always about you isnt it. :D

I suggest you google "wireless internet" and read some of the articles. Otherwise go to cnet dot com and look there. Oh and bookmark it too, they always have tons of info you may need later.

Thanks for the suggestion but I was hoping to get answers in English. Those websites just confuse me all the more, I don't speak computerese.

And yes... you're missing a lot if you're not in Las Vegas.

I'll post a followup later if necessary, but I gotta go.

Never mind, darling... I figured it out and did it.

Ok, with the help off my superior drawing skills I will now explain how it works.

http://hus7.rsn.bth.se/~magnus/misc/wireless.jpg

1. Hook up a wireless router to your cabel/DSL modem.
2. Install wireless network cards in every computer you want to surf with.
3. Make everything work together in a good and secure way.

Thats it. :D

We have wireless here.. it's the only high speed option other than satellite, which sucks, out in the country. ;) Apparently the cable guys are bothered by stepping on cow patties.. I can't imagine why.

You'll need wireless compatible network cards in your computers if you want no wires.. without those, it works like a normal cable connection through Cat-5 cables plugged into the networking card of the computer.

Our connection is very stable.. we had to work out a few kinks in the beginning with dropped connections that were a result of not having a good angle on our antenna, but it's been excellent for weeks now.

Edited: Hmm.. I think you mean you're getting wireless inside the house, not from external, so nevermind, but the middle paragraph still applies. ;) We have a wireless broadband service, but only one computer on a wireless connection inside the house.. the others have cat-5.

okay you guys and sunfox...

Do these extra cards cost more money?

MWisdom, what does this mean? 1. Hook up a wireless router to your cabel/DSL modem.

Does it mean that I set up one computer as the main "hub" and then the others work off of the cards from it?

I've been on hold with 2 providers so far this morning and I'm sick and tired of waiting for them to answer me. Do they really want business????

The extra cards does costs money.

You don't need to use a computer as the main hub (but it is possible to do it). You buy a wireless route that will do all the work. I can recomend this one http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=601 cheep and works well.

Yes sometimes, though you might get them with the service. They aren't much though.

Just ask for a wireless router and they will know what you mean.

Yup pretty much.

Nope they really don't so I would go elsewhere.

I can't find a price... how much are they? Can I buy one in Las Vegas, do you think or do I have to order it online?

Godddddddddd..... I'm so fucking stupid. I'm sorry. ;-(

DesertRose,

I'd suggest you invest the money in a couple of those "For Dummies" books, not that you are a dummie but, they are very easy to understand and you'll likely save a lot of headaches in the future by knowing some things yourself. Besides they always come with lots of other useful stuff and some of it is fun.

Go to circut city or some other computer store, wear a shirt that shows a lot of cleavage and a skirt that shows some leg and look for the youngest geekiest guy, or girl if you prefer, there is. Tell them you want all of your computers to be wireless, then just work your womanly magic and you'll be set up in no time.

And yes I am serious about that.

Oh and make sure you know what kind of internet connection you have and what types of computers as well just in case.

LMAO... This post and MWisdom's diagram made me almost pee my pants.

If you only knew how right you are, pal. Really, ask anyone here... they will tell you I'm not the sharpest tack on the board. LOL

You should find them in most computerstores. Online and otherwise.
Best buy sell them for $70.
And matching wireless networkcards for $50 and up (but I recomend that you use the same brand in all your wireless equipment, then the price is $70 for each card).

I haven't looked around for prices, you should do that before you buy :)

And remember that it's different cards for a laptop and a normal PC (unless you buy external usb cards, they should work with both)
