You can't block some people from commenting or voting for your work.

For instance, I just got a comment on one of my stories from a real jackass calling me names and telling me to "fuck off." Admittedly, he hasn't read any of my stories but only scanned the first chapter of one. So...he wrote telling me he, not only gave me one star for all three chapters, but he also went through all my stories and gave them one star without so much as reading a single line in any of them.

I realize people have their rights and this is a free site, but come on...

If you don't want to deal with someone in FB you can block them, the same with many other sites. I really think it would be a good idea for Literotic to offer the same thing.

Actually you should take that as a compliment. Not until you're told to fuck off and perform anatomically impossible acts by a troll can you truly consider yourself an accomplished Lit author...

;)

Pretty lousy thing to do. But they'll probably get wiped with a sweep.

Or you could email Laurel and give her a head's up.

I get it every day. Its a good sign youre getting under readers skins. First you piss them off, then you scare the crap out of them, tickle their funny bones, then break their hearts.

Send a PM to Laurel and ask her to run a sweep on your stories. She is often able to remove malicious votes. You can also delete any comments that you don't want to keep.

Right? That's some next level jealousy.

Those comments used to make me want to check the locks on my doors. But while they can still make me upset and queezy, I mostly smile or even laugh at them, and wonder about how screwed up and uptight they are. When it gets me down I vent here.

Sounds like a disgruntled author or author's fan who you displaced on a top list.

Not that any author who hangs here would do such a thing.

I would take it as a complement, then delete the comment and turn off anonymous feedback in you profile. Than only registered uses can leave you nasty comments. Of course with all the alt's running around that really doesn't mean much.

I thought about that phrase "too damn bad", racking my brains trying to remember where I'd heard it before . THen it came to me:
HERE.

Actually the jackass is signed in...

Of course he has NO stories submitted himself, although I never really considered that to be a prerequisite for having an opinion.

I think I will PM Laurel with copy of his comments. Just maybe she can do something about it.

From the guy's vitriol, I believe him to be mentally unstable.

Well there are a lot of those out there, yet they do have a right to their opinion. Whether it is sane makes no difference.

The sweeps will rid your stories of the 1 bomb. You can delete his comment.

Doing something about him, is another question and potential problem for all of us.

I've seen mention of 'sweeps'. Is there a sticky or FAQ explaining?

Nope and for good reason. Would you put in a safety system for your house and then put the diagram on the front lawn?

There is a lot of speculation but no hard facts. It's best not to speculate and give the idiots more ideas about how to circumvent the system.

It would make no difference if he/she had a hundred stories posted. There's no money in this game, so if you let someone rob you of the satisfaction of sharing your work, you come away from this with less than nothing.

Anonymous critics who post abusive comments have no influence over other readers. The author is their only audience and if you ignore them, you take away all their fun.

FWIW, when I PMed Laurel asking for a sweep some time back, she asked me to use the "report this story" option on one of the affected stories, and use the comment section there to indicate what needed to be swept. I did that and got a quick response with a whole heap of low votes vanishing.

Every time I see something like this...

everyone talks about the comments. As several have stated, comments can be removed by the author. The only time I take a bad comment to heart is if it is written by another author who I respect, or when someone strikes a chord and I know they're right.

It is not the comment with which I take issue, it is the vote.

As with any author, I put a lot into my stories. I work hard on them, I try to make them entertaining and realistic with a certain amount of eroticism thrown in. Since we all have those who love our work no matter what we write, the fact that there are hundreds more who vote than comment sets the vote as the only real gauge on which to base our successes and failures.

It's like an author who writes books. What the critics say is inconsequential, it's the number of books sold that determines whether the writer did a good job or not. Now imagine some asshole coming by and closing half of the bookstores.

It's just aggravating.

Okay, end of rant!

How does leaving negative comments equate to closing half the bookstore?

But I get your feeling. It sucks. But you get used to it.

If you see a negative comment, don't even look at it, just delete it. Try that.

When I get negative troll comments(Negative, but in a constructive way are different) I see it as a win for me.

Something I did pissed someone off enough to rant like an asshole ans show how ignorant he is for all to see.

You think when others read that comment they go "Yeah, good for you Mr. cyber tough guy!" No, they say "Look at this idiot!"

And by leaving them there for all to see I not only prove I don;t give a shit about his pathetic ass, but its there for others to mock and enjoy.

So like I said, its a win for me.

It seems I'm not alone

Being a new member and contributor, I fell victim to the Anonymous keyboard warriors commenting on a story I published. Within one day, all hell broke loose, including comment makers trolling each other!

Having now read a few more forum threads on the subject, I realise there is some emotive issue regarding "Loving Wives" and my somewhat loose use of the word "Cuckold" in the story description. Seems the subject of "Loving Wives" is a magnet for all the big man/small penis types who stalk this site anonymously...

Thankfully, I discovered I can switch off comments from these idiots. I don't mind negative feedback if it is constructive, especially from fellow contributors.

I guess that I figure fellow contributors appreciate the time and effort it takes to compose and submit a story, regardless of the subject matter and background to the story itself. It seems that Anonymous doesn't!

As good of a description for that pack of jackals as I can think of.

Welcome to the AH BTW!

God! How Many Times Do I Have To Say It Before Someone Actually Reads It

It's Not The Comments, People; It's The Votes!!!!!!!

It's Not The Comments, People; It's The Votes!!!!!!!

Any time you post to LW, you risk every single story in your list getting bombed this way -- by multiple malcontents. The whakko-loons there are proud to tell you that they're doing it as well. Don't be surprised if they stay alert and bomb any new stories that post as well.

As others have suggested, contacting Laurel can probably remedy the current problem ( although I suspect the no-read bombs on your other stories would have probably been caught by the Hoover anyway )

But if such bombing runs concern you, the only real remedy is to stay away from Loving Wives, though.

I almost think there should be a warning prompt that comes up on the submission form when you select Loving Wives as a category. It's that bad. Especially for new authors who have no idea what they're getting into.

I've seen some reader refute a negative comment. That's always nice to see but hardly gets mentioned.

It's Not The Comments, People; It's The Votes!!!!!!!

If you see a story - yours or anothers - that has suspicious-looking voting patterns, please do use the REPORT THIS STORY feature to bring it to our attention and we will run a manual check as well. In the OTHER field, tell us to check the voting. When you report suspicious voting this way, the system will send us a direct link to the story and make it much easier for us to check.
