Since I've been back to Lit, I keep seeing these 2 abbreviations. PYL/pyl. At the risk of pissing people off, I wonder who actually finds these terms easier and who finds them cumbersome and possibly silly. So, in my narcotic fogged state (I have a kidney stone), I thought I'd do a poll while I wait to fall back asleep.

LMAO.... I love it when you're all dopey... and I'm sneezy and KC is Doc and mmm can't remember those other guys, but one of them is cellis...

You know, with all due respect to AA (the author/inventor of this and I hope he copyrights it and then shares with me his royalties) ... I just can't get my head around using them. It's just my own personal thing. But hey... whatever works for everyone else is... whatever works for everyone else.

PS... I know your wacky sense of humor and I love this! LOL

At the risk of pissing off AngelicAssassin, who I rather like, I have to say I truly, utterly, and completely despise the whole PYL/pyl "thing" that has become part of the Lit lexicon. It isn't used anywhere else but here.

Sometimes, folks, you just can't lump everyone in one big category.

Verbal shorthand irritates me.

Labels don't. They are handy for identifying things.

My .02 cents,

Anelize

I"m so paranoid anymore about offending anyone, I tend to use the PYL thing. But, if I know how a person prefers to be identified or addressed, I try to stick with that.

Can be a bit taxing sometimes, the PYL/pyl thing. And what if you mis-capitalize something?
Still, they're handy for some situations but not all.

Odd mental image of a sub kneeling and saying "Yes, PYL Vix."
Very odd that....

Jet lag, its got to be jet lag...

I don't care. I'm kind of dyslectic and type PLY a lot. At least it doesn't make me shudder like W/we or U/us does.

maybe it's just that i'm new around here, or perhaps simply i am weird, but i do rather like the PYL/pyl thing. i've seen people on other boards or in chat rooms get pissed off at the wrong lable that this sort of shorthand seems useful to me because then it leaves it open to the interpretation of the reader while everyone ( at least those that have asked lol ) knows what they mean. it seems like a good way to keep down those misunderstanding that are often caused by people that just seem to get irked by certain labels....though if you know how someone does prefer to be spoken of i think it is only polite to use that instead of the general purpose acronym.

i have no problem with those that wish to write "Dom/me , Master, sub, slave, Top, bottom, ..." dominate, own, lead, beat, submit, <insert thread URL for the difference between a submissive and slave>, follow and wail.

PYLs and pyls works for me in clarity and brevity.

Um... they bewildered me, to be honest. Until I finally got a straight answer on what they stood foor.

I don't really have any consistent rules about using Dom or Top or capitalising or any of that. Personally, I just decide what works for me, and let other people do the same.

Thank you Mr. Helpful Answer Guy.... LOL

You mean there's no dwarf named sleazy? Damn... I feel all left out now.

And by the way AA... Des tells me she has seen your thing used at another bdsm-type site.

I'm thinking copyright... royalties... me.... You know?

Yeah ..Gumby, Sleazy, and Dork .. The PYL/pyl is a tad easier than all the random everyone picka friggin label thing...

*shrug* and if it is used no where else?? Well all this stuff starts SOMEWHERE.

Okay... I love being easy. The joke part... I'm not so sure about. Gimme time to think on that part. LOL

I thought that was St. John, St Paul, St. George and St. Ringo..

Well, I've been called Grumpy before now & definately think Fungi should be an honorary dwarf 'Sir Sleazy" . Somehow this thread is bringing out the funnies in you all.

Hate the initial thing & hate capitalisation (see Grumpy above) plus it makes it really hard for newbies who feel left out because they don't understand it and a nuisance for everyone having to reexplain them all the time. Sorry AA, I know why you started this one.

I'm with you except for the dyslectic bit. If it is a case where I am talking about a specific person and know their role I will usually use that role name, but for the discussions which have a broader scope it has minimised the long list of all labels/roles, then checking to make sure no-one got left out, before trying to remember what it was I was going to say in the first place.

Was a time I remember people getting cut if someone left out one or two of the labels in their post, so this alternative is an evolvement which cuts down on the extensive list, disgruntled posters, and need to think what role best fit where. I see it as a generic, inoffensive labelling which allows the reader to decide which role/label fits them or their situation best...and yes, find it easier to read than W/we, U/us, O/our anyday, not to mention the Top/bottom/Master//Mistress/slave/Sir/sub/S/switch/Dom/me/Daddy/little girl, list that used to be needed to keep all people covered and happy and still usually managed to leave someone out.

What she said.

I picked 'I don't care' on the poll, but that's mostly because I figure everyone can do whatever trips their trigger, and I'll do what works for me.

... And it's because I just don't really care. :D

Ya know, the reason I have kept returning here over the years is that you're such an interesting group. Thanks for the replies.

And, truthfully, when I was trying to type the poll, I kept typing "ply", just like WD. LOL I'm in the I don't care camp. I figure everybody can do what makes them happy.

tools of the trade

I find them helpful.

If you consdier the amount of threads and post dedicated to the outright hated of being pigeon holed into a "label", often the PYL/pyl keeps the topic general enough for people to contribute to the conversation.

I like to be able to use it and thank AA for coming up with it.

I like labels myself and think they are very valuable. I think there is way too much label-phobia.

So I am not in the "I don't care camp" I am more in the "I am glad they are there to use when needed and often do" camp.
:)
