Do not want to brag, but I got out of the market right before Greenspan's last rate hike when the Dow was at 11,400 and put it into secure growth. We are now seeing Clinton/Gore's true legacy nationwide. A similar collorary is California where environmentalists have fought the building of new power plants because its bad for the world. Hope you guys are stocked on candles (tee hee). And what about our formerly proud military? Do not think it has been this bad since after Nam when I was in the Marines. Now to you guys who backed Gore, I have a question. Would our economy really have been able to withstand four more years of Democratic attacks on Big business?

Here, I'll let you borrow my flame-resistant suit. You're
gonna need it.

Semper Fi!

PS: Be prepared for some absurd responses.

<--throwing the thread starter the cook book of conventional right wing wisdom LOL.....please spare us the spin pap. The economy has been better than any point in our history - due to a centrist Democrat AND a Republican congress that has withstood its own right wing

Ok..enough alcohol for you!

You are funny!! Really...you are.

And your economics degree is from what school?

Microsoft reports less than anticipated earnings and the sheep run for the hills...

Funny how it took Reaganism 14 years to see any results...then suddenly as soon as Clinton gets in it takes off...The office of President has little effect on the economy.

LOL, that was slightly amusing Jenny

oh crap, you were serious.....:( sorry

okay, that was harsh....i apologize, but seriously.

talking about the economy, what about the national deficit?

Between Republicans and democrats, Clinton has been the best thing that could have happened to our National deficit. Take a look at what was done under the republican presidencies before Clinton. Perhaps the greatest achievement of President Clinton is reduction in the deficit. In every year of the Clinton Administration the deficit has fallen and we currently have the largest surplus we have ever had! When Reagan took office the deficit was horrendous. Between Reagan and Bush the deficit shot up to -6.0%. At no time did Reagan or Bush reduce the deficit by even one penny from where it was when they took office. Compare that with President Clinton. In 1993 alone he lowered the deficit to half of what the Reagan administration raised it by. And it has been reduced every single year of his presidency so that today we have a surplus for God's sake. The government has a $237 billion surplus or the largest dollar amount in US history. That surplus allowed the government to pay down $211 billion on our debt.

Amazing, Im sorry, but that is damned respectable.

I don't think it was us tree-huggers, dear. I think it was the deregulation of the electric utilities (pushed by those same utilities, by the way), runaway wholesale pricing, and piss-poor management that caused our current problems. That and the price of oil, on which environmentalists have very little impact.

Since I'm not feeling very ladylike tonight, I'm going to tell you to go sit on a cactus and stimulate your brain.

Sorry kiddies

it was high-tech. It had nothing to do with Ronnie or Bill.

Jenny: See what I mean?

Why is it that...

So any one who disagrees with you is absurd? That stance is absurd in itself.

Libertarians are so convinced that everything they say is Gospel?

Ya know...they threw Galileo into prison and excommunicated him for saying the earth was NOT the center of the universe..they were wrong...you may be too. You are too arrogant to admit it though.

I abhorr arrogance.

I am willing to give Bush a chance and I like some of his ideas.

Damn....I actually agree with miles on something...I never credited the present admin for the economy. I t was the high tech boom. The present decline was bound to happen as soon as everyone realized the dot coms were over valuated.

I'm stone-cold sober

Miles, you go sit on a cactus too.

Thank you, Thor's Hammer. I really am in a vile mood tonight.

oh please

Clinton and Gore's strategy of fiscal discipline combined with opening foreign markets and investing in the american people for once is what led to never before seen economic progress. The United States is now in the the longest economic expansion in history, the lowest unemployment rate in decades, the most new jobs ever created under a single administration, the lowest poverty rate in twenty years. More than 22 million new jobs have been created since 1993.
Not only that, but this Democratic administration has put forth the most beneficial achievments in years.
Workforce Investment Act & The Adoption and Safe Families Act, The Lifetime Learning Tax Credit, HOPE Scholarships, Lifetime Learning tax credits,Education Flexibility Partnership Act of 1999.......etc

Who is in the White House has so little to do with the economy. It is all cyclical. The true relationship between the Presidency and the economy, is simply that an economic change usually CAUSES a change in the Presidency.

"Miles, you go sit on a cactus too."

And deprive you of oxygen? I will not!

miles, take a long walk on a short pier. And leave my cactus alone.

Could be worse. You all could live in Canada and have to deal with Stockwell Day...

Indeed? A cactus? Yes Bill buddy had plenty of money to play with since the previous evil republicans had just won a 30+ year-old war that had us building bomb shelters. We still have one (tee-hee). It's a great storage for ammo and other supplies. Shame on you for crediting the accidental president with so much. How did he find the time? Between jobs I mean (tee hee). My favorite pres on that scale. Now if I could just find a cactus under 12 inches of snow and ice. Think I'll start drinkning early!

Amazing!

How they continue to think that Ronald Reagan singlehandedly whipped the Soviet Union. It had nothing to do with Reagan. It was the weight of it's own inefficiency catching up to it and the shrinking of the world information wise.

Dictatorships can only survive as long as they can keep it's citizens ignorant of the rest of the world. When you control and dictate what information is available to the people then you can control their ideas and opinions. They also were able to control what the world saw of their society for awhile...the advent of Radio, television, satellite intelligence and myriad other leaks the Soviet citizenry became more aware of the outside world and the lies it's government had been telling them. The butchery of Stalin's regime left wounds that they never forgot. And I think to a large extent the marketplace and technology had a big hand in it. The Soviet Union dictators had that affliction that befalls all tyrants..pride. They had to be a superpower and to do so they had to expend so much of their GNP to keep up it crippled their already backward economy. In addition to keep up they had to educate their citizens. Education breeds people who think a lot...and start asking questions...a deadly thing if control is what you are attempting to maintain.

To think Reagan was the impetus of Soviet demise is naive and betrays a total ignorance of cause and effect. Excuse me, Reagan was so mighty and awe inspiring they just caved in? Reagan...who believed everything Edward Teller kept feeding him about his beloved "Star Wars" fantasy..(fifteen years later and they haven't hit a missile yet! In a controlled test at that!) And now we have Bush vowing to throw more money down that rat hole...why not just guarantee that anybody who uses a nuke against us gets ten times that...it kept the Soviets in check and they had more and better weapons...MAD I think they call it...we already have the weapons and can deliver them anywhere we want..in a matter of minutes...
I won't address his Voodoo economic policy (Stockman's description) and the mess that left us with...

Republicans aren't "tax and spend" that is for sure...they're worse "Borrow and spend"...

"Come on we can buy it now...let the next generation pay for it.."
Bottom line...since when has a Republican ever really eschewed spending?

I think you have been drinking far too long AJ...time to sober up...that stuff kills brain cells...BTW that is another reason the Soviets stayed in power so long...a demoralized and drunk populace...sober up and quit letting Rush tell you what to think...

Hear hear!

Pre-friggin-cisely. If anyone whipped anyone, the Soviets did it to themselves.
