I started reading this thread, and was about to go find this famous Bill Mauldin cartoon, but Rox beat me too it. Not many Mauldin fans in our generation.

M*A*S*H paid tribute to this cartoon of the old Calvary Sgt. and his broken jeep in an episode where Frank Burns thinks he can drive a tank, and while out of control, runs over Col. Potters jeep moments after the Col. jumps out of it.

Coming back to his smashed jeep, Potter takes out his sidearm and puts the jeep out of its misery.
