Its only a name: or is it?

So we have spoken about names before: how they were chosen, why they were chosen, and what they mean. But I can't help wondering about the sinister undercurrents in our psychology. In other words, not what do the names themselves mean, but what do they tell us about who we are.

For example: there is something inherently immodest in the name "hung-like-horsey" and there is something sadly reflective in "bobtoad". I don't want to seem to be saying something unkind - afterall this thread is non-judgemental, its simply thoughtful.

My name "slut_boy" is embarassing to me now. I think that at the time of joining the BB I was reckless and it was a sex site and (to be perfectly honest) I didn't think that I'd stick around the way that I have. But I don't like the name: it says something about the little boy inside my mind. It appeals to the person that craves sex and wants to peep up girls skirts and wants to be decadent.

With some intraspection, I am interested to know what you can discover about yourself from your choice of handel. Yes, please tell us what was on your mind Expertise, and BrainyBeauty, and CreamyLady, and others.

For me, it's just my nickname. However, since I aquired it in 1969, it has proven to be a useful nickname. I've found that If I introduce myself as "Weird Harold", I can say pretty much anything and only get "now I know why they call him weird" in response.

A lot of people should seriously consider changing their username if they want to be taken seriously more often. Since the name is the first thing we see of each other here, it affects the way people treat newbies. Picking something that lowers expections is hard to overcome without a consistant record of "good" posts.

I seldom use the account my author name has, because I know that "Dirty Old Man" would be expected to be nothing more than a flirt. I wouldn't even think of trying to overcome a name like Shit4Brains

Mine doesn't offer significant insight..

Picked mine from a really crappy piece of accounting software, of the same name, that we were reviewing at the time.

No deep dark secret there.

I chose my chatroom name *Texas Lady* because it is sorta obvious (although with the number of people who ask me a/s/l maybe it isn't) and well I have no imagination in choosing names. I am shylady on the board because..... well I don't know, but I am sure I had a good reason at the time.
I am actually very shy in RL so maybe that is why.

Nothing all that weird with mine, either. Cheyenne is one of my cats and I'm sure she was sitting next to my computer monitor, as she is right now, when I registered here.

I didn't think about it at the time, but I get a lot of questions about whether I live in Wyoming or not and if I have long dark hair (think American Indian). Nope, to either one! But the name also offers some measure of privacy- people in my RL may not ever think of me as Cheyenne because they would expect a "Cheyenne" to have a connection with Wyoming or American Indians, too!

I've said it before. My name was picked because it resembles what my parents was thinking about naming me.
Alexander.
Since I thought that was a bit too long, I shorted it down to plain Xander.

No big secret here either.

R Nitelight

R is my middle initial. Then I made a list of words that looked interesting in print. I picked Nightlight, played with alternate spellings, and came up with R Nitelight.

I chose my name from the Mary Stewart series on King Arthur. She gave Merlin's father the name Ambrosious and since I love the sword and sorcery genre, it fit my mood.

Insight? Yeah, I would kill to live in a fantasy novel, however, I would hate to give up my current life to do it. Dilemmas abound. Maybe it represents a simpler time in my life as well, for the first time I read the series was when I was in high school. I don't know.

Does that mean you're our Magic Merlin's daddy?

It is what I am called. Julia + Angel = Juliangel

Now I know I need to go back to sleep. I can do math with words. Going back to sleep for a little while see y'all in an hour or two.

I hate the name I chose. You wouldn't believe how many people think it is more than one mink. Some idiot in the chat room actually asked if he could "pet the pretty minx?" Give me a break! A minx is a girl or young woman who is considered pert, flitatious, or impudent. That describes me perfectly! A small, fuzzy, woodland creature, I don't think so.

Mine...ill attempt at humor...which is usually my path of choice.

Knowing you usually pick a name to post under that isn't your true name so people won't know who you are or find you. So, I thought, nickname and funny forget+you+know+me=forgetunome

P.S. I learned to do math with words from Julia + Angel=Juliangel! :D

Word problems!!!!!!!!!
I run screaming from the thread. Ben, protect me!!!!!

Why Naudiz...

Naudiz is the name of a Nordic rune signifying need. I've heard some versions where it signifies strife or famine. But the reason I liked it is because of a poem I read (where Nyd is the Old English variant of Naudiz):

Nyd oppresses the heart;
yet nonetheless often it
is transformed for the sons of men
to a source of help and salvation,
if only they heed it in time.

Which is, I guess, just a fancy way of saying "That which doesn't kill me makes me stronger." Though I prefer a variant on that saying that goes: That which does not kill me had better run like hell.

Anyway, I chose the name because it held personal significance, and it didn't sound too feminine, which I am not. The lowercase spelling was a typing error, not intentional.

I also liked the name because it kind of sounds like 'naughties'.

What does this say about me? I have no idea. Probably that I read too much, occasionally take myself too seriously, will sometimes make mistakes, but in the end I have a sense of humor? :)

My guess would be it has something to do with warts.

Hey, Slut_boy, why don't you change your name to "The Panty Professor" I wonder? And not just because that's the title of "your" story which soon (I hope) will be posted. Others have changed their names to protect the innocent, why not ewe (just getting you in the mood for your trip to Australia)?

Oh I forgot. Slut_boy, I did the two favors you requested.

Regarding reciprocation, can you do a Gene Simmons impression?

I chose Gaucho because of my fondness for Steely Dan and because I'm a lyric junkie and I love the ambiguity inherent in that song.

I always like to leave a little something to the imagination, I guess. :)

There is something ambiguous here...I'll get back to you as soon as I find it. ;)

Of course. I'll be here, waiting. Keep in mind that half the fun is in the looking, not the finding.

btw - I've been meaning to pass this on since I noticed your new signature. My all-time favorite piece of bathroom graffiti, written just above the tp on a bathroom wall in Yuma, Arizona.

"This is John Wayne toilet paper. It's rough and it's tough and it won't take shit off nobody."

Good one! My favorite is actually a reply to graffiti. Someone had written, "I fucked your mama!" Underneath that someone else replied, "Go home, Dad, you're drunk again!"

Er ... I chose the name because of sheer arrogant immodesty?

No, actually it was the result of the frustrating process of trying a lot of screen names in Yahoo which were variants of "Exotic" (which is how I've been told I look). This seemed to work, and was slightly more satisfying than:

* exotic523789 (I'd quickly forget the numbers, and have to find another screen name anyway)
* ex-otic (seemed to suggest I was blind--well, I'm blind to my faults, maybe, but ...)
* Comdexotic (would have been great if I had worked in computers...)

Ah, well, maybe Quixotic would have been a better fit ...
