But the winner seems happy enough. :)

The fourteenth annual Literary Review Bad Sex in Fiction Awards took place last week. The awards were set up by Auberon Waugh with the aim of gently dissuading authors and publishers from including unconvincing, perfunctory, embarrassing or redundant passages of a sexual nature in otherwise sound literary novels. Previous winners include Tom Wolfe, AA Gill, Sebastian Faulks, and Melvyn Bragg.

Iain Hollingshead was this year's winner, for a passage in his first novel Twentysomething (Duckworth). It was announced at a lavish ceremony in St James's Square, London. Actress, rock star and author Courtney Love stylishly presented the award.

Because Hollingshead (pictured, with Love) is a first-time writer, we wished to discourage him from further attempts. Heavyweights such as Thomas Pynchon and Will Self are beyond help at this point. Tim Willocks was the runner-up with his novel The Religion (Jonathan Cape), but ultimately Hollingshead's 'bulging trousers' tipped the balance. Willocks said: 'I have long admired Literary Review for creating this award - if only because it's a much better guide to a good read than those purveyors of powerful sleeping drugs, the Booker, the Pulitzer, the Goncourt et al.' Other shortlisted authors included David Mitchell, Mark Haddon, Irvine Welsh, and Julia Glass.
