Pulling into the parking lot, Adam felt rushed. Close to 7:00- closer than he'd like- and he was going to be late for the game. He pushed the button to power down the motor, reaching for his bag, cleats and glove jostling as he extricated himself from his car. He was already striding away, the car chirping as he locked it, heading to the field where the rest of his team was.

The evening was warm, with a hint of wind, the sun still shining for the moment in the early summer. A perfect day for ball. Mixed league softball was something Adam enjoyed, and he didn't like feeling hurried or stressed. But work had run long, and he hadn't had time to go home (much to his wife's chagrin) opting to grab some food on the way to the field.

That Adam had this to himself was something of a relief: he had enjoyed baseball as a kid, and when they had both tried to play, his wife didn't have any fun, and had made it worse for him. He and his wife were... fine, though he knew they were in a rut.

Adam dropped his gear by the bench, greeting his teammates and quickly swapping his athletic shoes for cleats. In some ways, softball was a good fit for him: he was tall-ish, athletic (though not as built as some on their team), brown-ish hair he kept pretty tight, with soft, quick hands, the kind that reacted well to a groundball, at his normal position of shortstop. He did not hit the monstrous home runs that some on his team did, but his sneaky strength did lead to some surprising line drives.

He knew where *she* was. Warming up on the field, she'd been here a while already. But she was always on time. One of many things he appreciated about her.

It was strange, in some ways, Adam's attraction to her. Not that he didn't look- though his marriage was stable, he and his wife had struggled recently, and that had left him lacking some things he enjoyed. He didn't lack for women around him, at work or here. She was... different. Not neck-snapping gorgeous, though Adam's own thoughts would suggest otherwise. God, the things he wanted to do to her...

Adam started throwing with another latecomer, only getting a few tosses in before they gathered to start the game. He could feel where she was, only managing a quick "hello", drawing a smile that stirred his fantasies before huddling with the other team before the game started.
