"It's just a porn board!"

I have seen this phrase thrown about since I joined. The message behind the statement is that we shouldn't take anything said here seriously. I have to wonder about that. Just because it's taking place on a porn message board is no excuse not to take at least some of it seriously. Some of the topics created are good for a laugh and nothing more, while others are deeply thought provoking, and provide an opportunity for people to gather and discuss.

Everyone is here because we have at least one thing in common: We like erotica, whether it's a story, a picture, art, or a good ol' fashioned porno movie. But just because it's a porn message board does not make some of the topics any less important.

Why then, is this attitude so prevalent? Why does the location of the discussions seem to matter so much? We're still (mostly) responsible adults with an opinion. I get the impression that if this were a more respectable place*, people would feel differently.





*I hesitate to use the phrase "more respectable place" but the simple fact is that this is a porn board, and I can't see too many people mentioning the fact they visit here to just anybody. I don't mean to be derogatory.

Yes this is a porn board, but really that miht draw folks in but it becomes secondary when you've been here for a while. It then becomes all about community. And just like any groups of friends we discuss all kinds of topics and subjects.

People are all different. They value things differently. Someone who isn't involved here or only lightly involved would probably say, "But it's just a porn board. Why do you care if SexxyBittch flamed you?"

Because people do care. They care about inanimate objects that certainly don't care about them, like stuffed animals, computers, and cars. They care about other people, whether in their own country or abroad. People make connections to things and places, and one of those places is here. To people without those connections, their caring seems silly.

It prevents heads from getting permanently stuck in asses. And therefore I think it actually makes for better debates. It's not to take topics less seriously, but to take ourselves less seriously.

In that case, why limit it to a porn board? I visit other fora as well, and have never seen anyone say "It's just a gamer board, don't take it so seriously!"

I have even visited other sites dealing with erotic material, but have only seen the attitude here. I suppose it could have something to do with the number of members, but it does seem to be a mind set around here.

I'm around on a daily basis, I just tend to keep my mouth shut. I like to discuss certain topics, but I avoid run-on threads, with the exception of one or two.


I visit the General Board a lot. You'd think political threads would get boring after a while.

Ahhh the general board*nods* that explains alot. I have been known to surface there now and then, but mostly I lurk, it's fun to look in now and then, but it's a bit to cut-throat for me. I also slip over to the playground now and then, but mostly my game playing das are behind me!

I tend to stay to the nicer, fluffier threads where I can, but sometimes i get tempted in to others, though thouhtful debate tends to give me a headache.

It's good to know its all here somewhere if I want it though.

I'm not very good at fluff. I tend not to say anything unless I feel I have something worthwhile to contribute to a discussion. To me, that's what a forum is all about, though I know it gets used for everyday conversation. I do post fluff, it just depends on my mood, but I'd rather get into a debate. The problem with that is that someone else usually comes along first and says what I was going to say, only more eloquently.

Ahh well thats the thing with debate, peoples opinions overlap. I think thats why I often get confused as they seem to go round and round in circles and I just get dizzy.

some days i only post on my own threads and the mood thread, as I don't see anything that catches my eye, other days there are lots of threads I participate in, it depends on my mood and the general mood of the board at that time and if they match up

Seriously, though, I think it's pretty easy to see through the comment "it's just a porn board". Whoever reasons like that, wants to ridicule the opinions of the people on the board, and make them less valuable/believable/important, by pointing out that they belong to people who are such low-lives that they hang out on a PORN SITE, ie they LIKE sex!

I believe this is the first time I'll ever use the concept "anal retentive" correctly within a sentence...

One cannot survive on sex and porn alone.

It's kinda like working in a bakery or ice cream shop. You might glut yourself on the goods when you first start working there, but you quickly lose the desire to eat sticky buns all day long, every day.
