It's going to be deer rut soon, is this why we seem to have troll rut here on AH at present?

At other times of the year, you can sometimes go whole days without sighting a troll. Not so much right now. You can’t turn around without bumping into one.

Maybe the bridge-dwellers are so amped up on testosterone that they lose their innate fear of humans and instead just focus on getting some sweet girl-troll tail.

They do this via sexual displays attractive to their womenfolk (aka posting threads here).

It makes sense, right?

Ah, fall.

When the leaves turn golden and the sweaters replace revealing tops.

Trolls will soon return to their basement dwellings, there to hibernate in beds lined with pork rind crumbs and reeking of Old Spice and spunk stained socks.

But before they do, they gather for one last frolic among their prey; spraying their testosterone fueled need for attention, marking their territory.

They cannot rest until they have proved their superiority and Alpha Male worthiness to all lesser creatures.

They can be blocked, ignored, but they never truly go away. They just hibernate, mutating to even worse forms.

It’s The Last of Us all over again 🤣.

Think of them as bears trying to fatten up for winter hibernation. They're busting into the threads, grabbing food where they can, and strewing garbage all over the place.

A few points:
The proper term for 'girl-troll' is trollop.
I don't think these are mating displays, at least in general. Trolls and trollops don't have a season like deer and many other animals, and obnoxious behavior can send them into a breeding frenzy at any time of year.
More likely, I deem, is that we're seeing migratory behavior from Autumn wanderings. Some are migratory by nature, following their preferred victims across platforms, so we may be witnessing such an incursion.
Simon's hibernation hypothesis also has merit, and where one troll or trollop makes a mess, it often causes a pile-on effect when others of their ilk notice the litter.

cull

verb

a means of maintaining a population at an acceptable or agreed level, or reducing it to that level and holding it there.

Well, maybe. The first time I got heavily into an Internet forum was when IMDb.com (the internet movie database) used to have one. Or rather, many of them - every actor, director, movie, genre etc. had their own board, which is - well, a lot. So basically, it was the same fifteen years ago. A forum has all the limitations of any social media. People knew each other only through an online username, comments were often irrelevant, there were many arguments (are they still called "flame wars?"), and so forth. It could be a fun diversion at times, but much of it was not useful as a discussion of much.

So now we see something similar on Lit. (Already I'm rambling; see the problem?) So, to answer you question: trolls come and go. I'm not sure they are more common now than before. I can't even be sure when I think I see one. Maybe I just don't agree with the person.

Oh yeah, the anonymity online makes for, let's call it, careless behavior. Back when you had to speak to someone face-to-face, you had to think a bit before you just blurted out some comment. That would explain the present losing "their innate fear of humans."

I think this fits in with what I said. It's all just talk - babble, perhaps. Or frankly, BS. One can do as one pleases, but it's not serious. I'm not sure why anyone would want to "have mating displays" with someone who may be in British Columbia. Or New Zealand. That's if you even have any geographic info. It used to be that you had to go to a bar to do that kind of thing, and thus do it directly in front of the other person.

As a hunter, I fully endorse this take.
