Three hurricane warnings in three weeks. That's what it takes to get me to hire three guys and their truck to buy $200 worth of plywood, bolts and screws, and spend half a day covering six sliding glass doors, a French door and three windows.

They just finished.

It's eerie. Even in the dark, my house isn't this dark. I have a new appreciation for ambient light.

Arggh.

SeaCat was right. This sucks. On the other hand, it beats being in Jamaica right now.

P.S. A strange, unanticipated side effect of having a house entirely encased in 3/4" plywood is the realization that I might be a teensy bit annoyed if Ivan skips us altogether.

Do what you have to do hon.

We're all praying for you guys. The worst I've lived through is a dust storm and an electrical storm. Both were frightening.

A few planks of wood beats flying glass. I'll light a candle for you and hope that Ivan(?) passes you by.

Best I can do from the other side of the world.

Shereads,

Where in the world did you get Plywood. I can't find any here in West Palm.

You have to look hard to find the good points in this, but they are there.

Admit it, Sher. There's nothing quite like the glow of the monitor lighting up your house with porn. ;)

Take care of yourself, hun :rose:

At least for the purveyors of plywood. :D

You and Mrs Cat take care, too, OK? :rose:

You do have enough batteries

for all your marital aids, don't you?

I mean, honestly. Essentials first!

She, SeaCat - we are thinking of you and of the others who are dealing with yet another storm.

This one seems evil - take care of you and yours.

Cat, I have no idea. I found something more valuable and far more rare than plywood: a handyman who shows up when he says he will, and doesn't mind standing in long lines at Home Depot even though nobody is paying for his time in the event that there's no plywood.

I think he found it at the Home Depot in Hialeah or the Miami one on SW 8th Street.

You have my sympathy. A good friend is heading to her mom's house in Vero Beach this weekend, to deliver gas - and gas cans. There are no gas cans to be had, even in Miami, so I'm donating the two I use for the lawn mower. There's also no electricity and no phone service and no cell phone reception at her mom's. They have a generator, but no fuel for it.

Weather. It's a bitch.

Here's a tip for you well-wishers, if theres even the possibility that you'll ever faced with a lengthy power outage: buy every battery-powered fan you can find, and every battery-powered lantern, and all of the batteries on the planet, and gallons of bottled water. Do not let anyone borrow your battery-powered fans. Give them your kidney first. You can live with one kidney, but without battery-powered fans, the dark is darker and the silence is more ominous.
