It's called "Attack of the Clones"

Am I the only one who thought of dear departed Ed Wood when I heard this?

DCL

Care to fill us (or at least me) in? What is called "Attack of the Clones?" A horror movie? A tepid potboiler about small town life? The Barbie manufacturing facility? What?

EBW--I did too.

The new Star wars Movie. Epsisode 2

Turn your radio to a news channel for about 15 minutes and you will hear at least twice about the scientist planning to clone people this year.

Talked about it in the book to movie thread, but Sunday night "The Third Twin" was on. The book was even better. Makes you wonder what has already gone on we don't know about.

Ah, so. And this is worse than Phantom Menace how? Not to mention, who cares about the next installment? The last one was worse than Jedi, a lot worse.

But, the whole Star Wars mythology was full of Cold War-inspired rhetoric. If GWB manages to succeed in manufacturing more Cold War sentiment, the next installment should do very well at the box office. You know, like Ace Ventura 2 and Jurassic Park 3.

Ah, imitation of yourself. The sincerest form of narcissism.

Who gives a flying fuck?

*sees no hands raised*

That's what I thought.

Star Turds... what crap...

No. I'm seeing heroines in bullet bras and silver plates on strings and lots of melodramatic screaming.

I think some people only have one brilliant idea and that's it (which is more than most of us, to be fair). Maybe Lucas had one moment of brillance and now it's past.

I'm going to see it and I bet money I'll enjoy it.
Come on, who wants to place a wager? Of course, I can't bet money cause I don't have any but I'm certain we can wager on something.

I understand that on it's own it sounds retarted, but this shit is written to the end already. The story was done a long time ago. This isn't about plot. This is about the digital arena. People have rediculous expectations about what this work is.

Anyway, What the fuck is a title? Practical statements? Descriptions? Maybe you aren't seeing a pattern?

I.... The Phantom Menace (uh yuh... that's right)
II.....The Attack of the Clones( uh yuh.. hence the Clone Wars)
III.....Death of the Jedi (Or something of the like, would be fitting)
IV......A New Hope (uh yuh.... quite fitting)
V.... The Empire Strikes Back (come on folks.)
VI......The Return of the Jedi

Now that I've explained this, try to understand that I could druge up a lot worse, and so could you. Systematics in titling matter.
He has used a breif hint of what is going on with each title.

People are just phasing this out in their minds because they know the end but are expecting something surprising in the plot.

Tough shit. It is written.

Sith takes lord.. Sith lord dies
Jedi find the Anti Sith, Anakin who must succumb to being a sith lord to enable his children to save the universe.
Hence empowerment of the Senator Palpatine, now Emperor.
The Trade Federation Army succumbs to the Emperor along with many humans, who would otherwise be killed by the attacking CLONES (Trade Federation Army).

I can tell you that I am wanting to know what people actually expect. A suprise? Ha. That is done, now this is where you sit back, love a story in whole, and you enjoy the art of it.

Attack of the clones just doesn’t sound cheesy; it’s an extra cheesy special with 4 types of cheese.

Coming Soon.

Star Wars Episode III: The Jedi Gigolo

Hey, Anakin is making it with a queen that's probably supporting him (I doubt being a Jedi Knight pays well) so it COULD happen.

:p

Hey if you were ablt to make millions churning movies out like this wouldn't you?

My only concern was it may have been a poor choice for a title due to the controversy of cloning. Maybe right now wasn't the time to name it that. But hey... they seem to know what their doing. Laughing at us... all the way to several banks.

That sounds like something that would have ended up on MST3K. I gave up on Star Wars after "Jedi".

This really was an obvious choice...when the last movie came out, I was talking with a friend and we reasoned that the next two films would be:

Ep 2: The clone wars
Ep 3: The rise of vader

One thought i heard around the internet...Anakin Skywalker is NOT Darth Vader. it is a clone of him that becomes vader. Otherwise...why have us root for little Ani in Ep 1? Hell, root for the kid to get killed....after all, as Vader, he murders millions, if not billions of people. (Remember him blowing up and entire planet in Ep 4?) Would you make a movie about Hitler as a kid, put him in cute situations and make people root for him to win the big race? NO!

Should be interesting to see what happens in the movies, at least to see how this cute kid becomes Vader....

Okay Pokerman now that smiley face on your shorts is starting to scare me.;)

In light of the fact that this thread beckons "here substance, substance" and some of you are really tempting it in me.....

Like, having just read what Pokerman had to say about Anakin, (and I like his attitude.... Skeptical but intrigued by the possibilities.)

I do want to ask you to consider some things about what you've said on why he'd get us to sympathize and love Anikin, to try and think for a moment about the emotions that will well up when things go bad. It is important for you, the viewer to feel betrayed. As will the people who love him.

The "more machine than anything" statement my Obi wan (hint, hint????) makes you wonder.

However, about being apportioned to his audiances' tastes, you should notice that Lucas has never concerend himself with political correctness at the worry of hollywood politics, or loss of part of a certain demographic or ethnic group. If he opts to make it a straight transition...and not actually kill Anikin, then so be it.... jedi. ;)

I wanted to say that this whole issue of Anikin not really being Vadar is interesting concept, but I personally think the truth is that it is an irony that life presents people with. I think it's all symbolic of the innocence in us as children that gets tainted by hurt, greed, arrogance and pain.... We abuse because we are abused, and we may come around in the end or not. That is within our power only.
It is all about chances. Life doesn't always give us happy endings. The reality of life is far more about what WE make of it.
Losing control is common. It only makes things worse too. So, this is all a reflection of the life lessons Lucas has encountered as a man.

Well that said, I want to see if anyone else was frustrated with the social conflict that arose from Episode I. And what may arise from Episode II, hence what Merelan eluded to. (good observation and point by the way. :) ) (sorry, Name edited for accuracy)

What I mean is, take for example his using Asian accents on the Neimodians. (trade federation regulators) Look at the choice in calling them Neimodians. Nematodes are a soil pestulence that causes great damage to roots of crops. That is the root of the name. Crops are good.... Nematodes aren't. China has many incidents of ongoing abuses to the people of Tabet, a nation that Lucas sympathizes with, and other small nations (reclaiming Manchuria after 100's of years, when the Manchurians has set themselves apart culturally and had no real current social ties with China. China didn't care, Coal was what mattered, not the people of Manchuria).
He isn't a bigot, he is a fundamental humanitarian by heart, and an artist, but his personal belief system is under attack by ethnic groups he cares for.

Jar Jar binks Character (as much as some hate him) was a way of expressing the underdog as a important part of the scheme of all things to be. Supression.... The conflict between the Naboo and the Gungans (symbolizing ethnic struggles) made it so the Gungans remaind separate from the Naboo, having to make good of what they know. Maybe their speech was different (that like many slave negros spoke yet they were using the same language). Only when they united (really united) did any good come of their seperate knowledge.

Take Jar Jar Binks. African Americans attacked Lucas because of the way Jar Jar acted. Shit. Did I miss something or did supressed African slaves talk a certain way? I saw Roots, and from what I was told, Kunta Kentae was a legit, historacally personifying character of African Slave background. Supression kept speech refinement in blacks from developing until we left off (for the most part) that supression that whites maintained by keeping standards low for African Americans up until the mid 70's and early 80's.

I see it all as an artistic interpretation of social observation rolled into an epic to help us observe our flaws and good points, and what our options are, and where we can go with them.

Maybe this clone thing is an important thing to think about. Maybe we'll lose sight of the value of life if it is simply an easy act to replace it.

Scary stuff folks..... scary.

Well, I see him trying to envoke thought in people, and those who are only out to be thrilled, surprised, you'll be let down if that is all you care about. That can only be expected.

I expect to have unsettled feelings envoked in me by the next film.

Star Wars was inspired by movie serials, but its heart lies in mythology, and in mythology you have deeply flawed heros. Hercules killed his wife. Medea killed her children. Orestes killed his father. Chronus ate his children. Promethus steals fire from the Gods and as punishment is made immortal and eaten by an eagle for all eternity. Arthur fucks his sister and is destroyed by his son. Robin Hood is poisoned by Maid Marion.

Being a hero sucks.

Good people do terrible things all the time in mythology; that's what makes the stories resonate for centuries. Lucas konws what's he's doing with Anakin. There's no chance Lucas would pull the rug out from under the feet of his story's resonance by copping out with an Anakin "clone".

Actually, after thinking about it for a while, I believe "Attack of the Clones" is a hopeful title. Maybe it's a hint that Lucas will inject some of the Saturday Afternoon Flash Gordon serial fun back into the franchise.

Oh yes. It was somewhat covered in the film "Robin and Marion", and based completely on the original Robin Hood legends. Just so you don't start weeping, it was years later, when they were old, and she did it as a merciful act. (Although in some old versions of the story it's not Marion but a nun.)

Any movie title that begins...

"Attack Of the..." leads me to expct something on the order of "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" or "Attack of the Killer Clowns"

I thought Geo. Lucas was a better judge of popular psychology than this. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking of "movies so bad they're funny" when I see this title and have no expections of the movie making any sense.

Perhaps he's going for a "That was a lot better than I expected" reaction from the audience?

Wait, wait, wait...you're forgetting the titles of the movie serials he's invoking (or trying in invoke). They were full of "Captian Avenger Meets the Mole People" and "Invaders from the Deep" and "Dr. Zybox and the Death Ray of Floordoom", and, my personal favorite, "Unleash the Boombah!" titles. That's what he's doing here. The title is SUPPOSED to be stupid. He tried to do that with "The Phantom Menace", but the title just wasn't campy enough. I cdon't think you can get campier than "Attack of the Clones".

Anyone recall laughing at the title "The Empire Strikes Back"?

For all that the man chooses names that basically scream "B Movie!" you have to give the man credit. He has made a Sci Fi movie series into one of the biggest phenomenons of our era. And is making millions on it.

I've decided that since I have acess to Episode II script that I am going to read it tonight. I wasn't going to do it, because I am very clearly a fan, and like surprises, but there will be enough digital eye candy to pull me through, so fuck it.

Then I'll make an objective, and Jedi like anylsis and although I'll say nothing, I'll tell you if the dialog is intellegent or not.

Now, mind you, I've already seen a great deal of footage of the making of the film, and it is so far a show of color and lights, but don't be deliusioned and give up yet. The screen shots, and dialog I've seen is enough for me to say that this film will be more laden with variety in scenes, time and effort than Episode I.

You are all aware that Lucus cut out a shit load of Episode I to meet pathetic time limitations set up by people who didn't realize that people can handle a 2 hour and 30 minute movie as opposed to what it was cut to.

He promised he wouldn't comprimise that shit with this film.

So, yes, we are talking creeped out creatures, and all sorts of species that will be mass annihilated by the clones over the next two films.
