Machine translation has come a long way, but how long?

I decided to put Google to the test and have it translate a snippet from one of my stories back and forth between several different languages iteratively, i.e. using the output from one translation as input for the next.

The resulting text is... interresting.

Original text.

The corset had no bottom and offered a view as delicious as the rest of her. I was hard as a rock before we reached the landing and when she guided me inside a luxurious room that seemed to be assigned to me for my stay at the manor the front of my pants stood out like a little tent.

Translation to German.

Translation back to English.

The corset had no floor and offered a look at as tasty as the rest of her. I was hard as a rock before we reached the landing, and whenever she led me into one of the luxurious rooms that seemed to me to be assigned for my stay in the yard, standing in front of my pants like a little tent.

Translation to French.

Translation back to English.

The corset has no floor and offered a look at as tasty as the rest of her. I was hard as a rock before reaching the landing, and when she took me to a luxury accommodation that seemed to be awarded for my stay in the yard, standing in front of my pants like a small tent.

Translation to Latin.

Translation back to English.

Yea, they sacrificed in the corset, not only to see, even as the rest: alternate, however, use out of it. I was as hard as the rock of the harbor before the, and ye took me, when he seemed to be awarded to the stability of a luxury residential area, just as he stood small tent in my pants.

Translation to Swahili.

Translation back to English.

Well, offering in corset, not only to see, even if the rest of the alternative, however, the use out of it. I was as hard as a rock of port before, and took me, when he seemed to be awarded to the stability of luxury residential area, just as he stood a small tent in my pants.

Translation to Finish.

Translation back to English.

Well, that offers a corset, not only to see, even if the other option, however, use out of it. I was as hard as a rock in the harbor before and took me away, when he was awarded the stability of a luxury residential area, just as he had a small tent in my pants.

Translation to Swedish.

Translation back to English.

Well, there's a corset, not only to see, even if the second option, however, use out of it. I was as hard as a rock in the harbor before and took me away, when he was awarded the stability of a luxury residential complex, just as he had a small tent in my pants.

Translation to Spanish.

Translation back to English.

Well, there's a corset, not only to see, even if the second option, however, the use of it. I was as hard as a rock in the harbor before and took it off when he was awarded the stability of a luxury residential complex, and he had a small tent in his pants.

Translation to Klingon.

toH, tu'lu' corset, wej neH, petaQ legh, vabDot pagh vImuSchugh DuH cha'DIch, 'ach 'oH. let law' nagh in front of rut mutlha'taH 'ej vang luxury residential Qatlh stability van'a' ghaH 'ej qaStaHvIS yopwaH tent mach SutDaj.

Final translation back to English.

Well, yet there is a corset, I saw the bastard even if vimus or the second Way, but. There seem to be a hard stone in front of it, and sometimes action man luxury residential Complex stability Award and a small tent in His pants.

Now that's erotica. I'm severely tempted to do this to the entire story and credit Google as co-author. :D

You do some strange things when you're bored. But, considering your name, I shouldn't be surprised. :p

This one I like. Mildly Shakespearean:

But the translation to Klingon and back to English was . . . interesting. Makes me wonder how Chang (Christopher Plummer) in Star Trek VI managed to quote the old Bard so well . . . .

I think he was quoting the original Klingon
:)

Somehow the idea that a few trips through Google Translate is the only difference between smut and something Patrick Stewart might read out loud in the Royal Shakespeare Company is kinda cool. :D

I've always liked Christopher Plummer's Chang. It's nice to see a devious Klingon once in a while. And ya gotta love a guy with an eye-patch bolted to the skull...

God I love Patrick Stewart. One of my favorite Star Trek episodes ever: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=o_eSwq1ewsU

When you ask TNG fans about the top episode of the series, it's either that one, Family or Inner Light. All Patrick Stewart episodes of course.

Yeah, he was definitely the star of the show...

That episode was just great. Because at the end, when he admits to Troi that he actually saw five lights, you realize how hardcore he is. He actually had been mind-controlled, but clung to what he'd said before all the torture even though he no longer believed it.

I'm constantly torn between TNG and Voyager being my favorite . . . iteration of the franchise.

Boy do I wish I could use this to show why GT is not good.

If you pick a less... suggestive... text, I don't see why you couldn't use it in a school setting. You could also simply have Google translate a text into French and pass it out to the students as an assignment to correct. If you pick the right text, it might be entertaining. :)

And Ripley's Believe It Or Not . . . .

I met the guy at a convention in the late nineties. Total prick.

Well, to be fair he directed some good episodes and some of the better movies. And he was perfectly cast for the part of Riker. Being a bit of a prick is probably not a negative trait to have when playing an up-and-coming executive trainee.

But as far as raw acting chops goes, the cast was Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner plus a bunch of enthusiastic amateurs.

As opposed to the original cast, which was entirely a bunch of enthusiastic amateurs. ;)

Yeah, I'll admit Frakes isn't bad behind the camera. Wish he would have just stayed there.

Great Idea.

Fun stuff. I did it once a year or so with the first few lines of the lords prayer, but just back and forth from English, to another language and back to English. That was amusing, but you took it to a whole new level. LOL.

I should try that with JFK's "I am a jelly donut" speech. English to German then back to English. :p

Backwards

I did it in reverse order, from English to Klingon and so on. I used the Bing Translator for the Klingon and Google for the rest. For added difficulty I used the Klingon 'plqaD' option which used the Klingon type. (Have to admit that I'm not that deep into Trekdom, liked it but didn't get fanatic)

It got really weird. Here is the final English.

"Need to make China strong in me, and a possession, or if there are a lot of infections and okkered Chorset attacks the

when the leader left the room, looking beautiful in so many joys choice

Ministry of the poem, was still in the tent, so you take it."

The "okkered Chorset" came from Klingon to English.

The "China" bit came from Latin to English.
