Okay, foot in mouth . . . didn't know there was a self-nomination option.
I used to laugh at a friend who ran around saying he'd been nominated for a Pulitzer. You can nominate yourself for that one too (and I'm sure he did--I read his book). It's what comes after that. The Eppies are pretty good because after people put up their own money to nominate themselves (unless their publisher wanted to do it), the books nominated then go into some judging panels. I'm presuming the two that Selena identified passed at least the first judging panel.
The one we just went through with "best new publisher" (I've already forgotten the name) is pretty much like the contests here on Lit. You can nominate yourself and then get your friends to vote for you because they like you. Not much more than a personal popularity poll.
I do know you can nominate yourself for that contest, because I nominated eXcessica for best new publisher myself (and probably so did some other folks).
