Bibi Aisha has begun to recover after her husband, father-in-law, and brother in-law cut off her nose and ears in a brutal attack in a remote area of Afghanistan – and now she might also see some justice.

Aisha, a child bride who dared to run from her arranged marriage to a Taliban fighter only to be captured again and mutilated, grabbed world attention in August when Time magazine used a picture of her on its cover.

It is unusual for police in Afghanistan to intervene when villagers impose punishments even as severe as flogging and stoning, which are allowed under Shariah law, but Aisha's case was different.

"This is against Afghan-ism, against Afghan and Shariah laws, against every principle in the world, against humanity, so that's why we wanted to bring him to justice," said the provincial police chief where Sulaiman was arrested, Brig. Gen. Juma Gul Himat.

Maybe there is Hope?

Nope.

GOP shuts down bill to prevent child marriage

I can't help thinking this is the US butting in where it has no business doing so. I don't know what is meant by "child marriage," although I know there are brides of 16 years old even in the US, and there have been even younger girls married in the fairly recent past.

I don't like the idea of pre-pubescent girls - or boys - forced into marriage against their wills, by either tribal elders or their parents, but I also don't like the idea of the US being a buttinski. If you are interested in my feelings on abortion, I am 100% in favor of abortion or birth control on demand, regardless of the age of the requester, and without parental notification.

ETA: Here are details on child marriage in the USA. http://www.coolnurse.com/marriage_laws.htm

Even now, children under 16 can get married with parental consent and/or the order of a judge (tribal elder?)

Oh brother, like this ridiculous bill will prevent such atrocities as that poor woman being horribly mutilated.

With all the problems this country has we're worrying about what people do among themselves in other countries? This is nothing more than the type of gratuitous global village bullshit that appeals to the bleeding hearts, nosey pokes and professional protesters in this country.

Maybe we can send them a couple billion bucks that we don't have to help prevent this problem...just like the other rat holes we've dumped our foreign aid down over the years.
