... to see this come up again and again. But the bigots and hatemongers never give up. Legalized descrimination by majority. :(

Lawmakers Vote To Advance Gay Marriage Question

Boston (AP) -- A joint session of the Massachusetts Legislature has voted to advance a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

Sixty-one representatives and senators voted for the amendment and 132 voted against it. But the measure needed only 50 votes to advance.

The vote by the constitutional convention came with no debate on the final day of the legislative session.

The vote means the amendment outlawing same-sex marriage is on track to appear on the 2008 ballot. It must once again get the support of at least 25 percent of the Legislature in the next two-year session, which begins tomorrow.

Earlier today, Governor-elect Deval Patrick urged lawmakers to adjourn the convention without taking a vote, saying it would serve no public interest to continue focusing attention on the gay marriage issue.

Twice before, the convention recessed without a vote.

Massachusetts is the only state in the nation where gay marriage is legal. The proposed amendment would define marriage as the union of one man and one woman, but would not undo same-sex marriages that already occurred.

Hopefully this will die before it reaches the vote.

**throws the amendment on the ground...stomps it with 5" heels and pounds it with a sledgehammer :D ** Here's hoping. :rose:

Do they actually think that the only couples that are capable of experiencing the deep love and devotion that leads to marriage are those of the "opposite" sex? :p

I know. That's what makes me sad. I can already see all the biblethumpers lined up at the polls to spread their small minded hate all in the name of god. :(

They don't care. It's different therefore it should be feared and hated.

In a perfect world it would be accepted...but sadly that is not the world we live in. :(

Yet... is not this the way of human nature? :)

We were all very sad here when our ammendment passed, and by almost a 20% margin, if I remember right. I hope I live to see the day that there's national protection of gay marriage, but I suspect I won't.

No, it's definitly not. But we can keep working on it.

Sadly, it is.

Wouldn't it be amazing if one day everyone, everywhere woke up and saw just how selfish and stupid they were acting?

I firmly believe that some day, hopefully in my life time, people will look back on these days much the way we now look back on the first half of the 20th century with segregation of blacks and whites. It will seem unbelievable to people living in that day that we were all so full of intolerance, hate and fear.

Radical Solution?

You could repeal the Declaration of Independence and become a British Colony again.

It is a crime in the UK to advocate discrimination against people because of their sexuality, and, as Mat and Min have demonstrated, it is legal for same sex couples to have a civil union.

Oh I totally agree that this will happen. But I just wonder if it'll be in our lifetimes or the next. Already the next generation (our kids) are much more open-minded and tolerant, so we can hope that's a sign for the future.

Isn't it odd that we left the Britihs Empire to persue our own freedom and now the land that we left is more fee than ours? Dispite our claim of "Land of the Free". We really need to qualify that now to read:

"Land of the Free White Christians. *Limited offer of Freedom does not apply to Blacks, Jews, Mexicans, Gays, Muslims or any other minority. See Constitutional Amendments for details."

Now there is a goal to shoot for.

It is beyond my comprehension why anyone would hate and fear a union between two persons of the same sex.

Much less attempt to legislate said unions out of existence.

Love is love no matter who is doing the loving.

There are a lot of miserable hetero marriages out there and I'm sure plenty of happy Gay relationships.

I know which one I'd rather be in, sex nowithstanding.

Let's hope for a brighter tomorrow.

And more understanding from those who's hearts are hardened.

Peace.

That's not too uncommon cd.

People, and nations, try to hold on to their glory days. Which in the U.S. case is in the 1950s.

*HUGS* vella.

You and lucky should come to Canada. It's almost warm here these days. ;)

I heard this on the car ride home and started fantasizing about people turning out in record numbers in support of gay marriage rights.

They do in the UK. Most cities and large towns have a Gay Pride event each year with ordinary families turning out to watch the parade. Locally the event is started by the Lord Mayor and official bodies send delegations, not necessarily gay, as support.

i cant imagine that here in texas.
with my luck, i'd show up and it would be like a round up of deviants. something like a rodeo where they lasso the lambs and tie their limbs up in rope for the best time...then lead them to slaughter.
i really do love america but there are so many things...too many things to fight for.

No, but Texas was never really into Morris Dancing either.

Englishmen and Englishwomen have preserved the right to be eccentric in public. We exported most of the kill-joy Puritans to New England. They were glad to get away from the godless, fornicating, drunken... (Add your own epithets) they left behind in England. Then the Scots, Welsh and Irish have their own forms of eccentricity. Can you imagine Texas Rangers wearing the kilt with pride?

We can be different in public and enjoy ourselves. After all, I can walk through the streets dressed as Henry VIII, not as part of a parade but on my own, and the only response I get are smiles.
