A Case of Discrimination

All I can do is laugh about it till tomorrow.

This is the deal. I have family that lives in a little camp trailer at an RV park here in Oregon. We have been visiting them 3 or 4 times a week. We are never rude to anyone there and only hold hands and occasionally hug. We are not lude or crude when we are in public. While visiting today, the manager or owner comes over and asks to speak to my Aunt. She comes back from talking with her and heads in the trailer. After a few she comes out and goes about what she was doing before the lady showed up.

Well finally I ask what is up. She just had this odd look on her face. She gets really embarassed and tells us she does not know how to put it. The lady she was talking to says she has had several complaints about us and when we leave today we can never come back. The woman did not even have the nerve to ask us to leave herself.

She has a big surprise coming her way tomorrow. I would expect this from the state I grew up in but not Oregon or a county with an Anti-Discrimination Law.

Im sorry youve had to put up with this shit! Sometimes i dont believe its 2004!

A ray of hope i can offer is for the future.
I have 3 children, all now nearly ready to leave the nest. None of whom have any fears or prejudice against differing sexualities. I have been fortunate to have a few very close friends who are not heterosexual, thanks to us all educating my children so that they can make a truly informed choice as to which viewpoint they have, they are all happy to embrace people regardless of their sexuality.
The last to convert to open mindedness was my teenage son. A family gay male friend was burgled, his lovely home graffiti'd with the slogan, 'fuck off faggot' in spray paint over his walls and bed. My son was there helping me wipe down walls after a nice police officer had walked out with the retort "looks like a lovers tiff to me". To see for himself the prejudice against other sexualities was enough to make up his mind.
So for future generations, at least with my hereditory line, the prejudice has stopped.
All parents have this responsibility to teach children acceptance of others, to challenge prejudice in their children and to allow good role models into the childrens lives, be they gay, str8, ts or whatever they like.
Someones sexuality is really only important if your sexually interested in them anyway.

Thank you Shell.

I spoke with the woman this morning and she told me she does not approve of our kind and does not want us back in the RV Park. I let her know that she could not stop me.

Now she is kicking my family out of the Park:(

Like I said this is the first time I have really had to deal with discrimination due to my sexual preference (sept for PJs dad). I am Angry, Hurt, Sad, etc........... Most of all, I feel guilty for getting my family evicted.

I am very sorry that you and your family have to go through this.

First of all, I would urge your family to check the legal status of their residence in the park. Do they have a lease? They may have legal options. Of course, on the other hand, do they want to remain there after this experience?

But, more importantly, this situation seems especially pernicious, because of the possibility of it driving a wedge between you and your family. I hope that does not happen, but I think you need to take care to make sure that there is no resentment, that no one comes away from this experience blaming you for what happened. Your relationship with your family needs to be your main concern, in my opinion.

I second that. It's nice to hear about your children, education is the key :)

TY Q~ and all for your replys.

The owner found out she can not throw my family out and not allow us over there. So she has just decided not to accept my aunt money for this next month.:(

My Aunt and her BF does not blame us. They do not want to live someplace that discriminates.

Someday things will change and this kind of behavior against another Human will stop. Till then we can only be strong and speak out. I am going to start wearing Gay Pride stuff over there for the next few weeks.:)

Have a nice Evening all:kiss:

damn...

Ever thought about writing to the local paper or to calling the local news station?

I have to admit, for all my hearings elsewhere of Portland being "San Francisco of the NW" it sure has not lived up to that but in small areas.

I still love it here, but racially and sexual-orientationally - this area is not ahead of any curves. Prejudice is still alive here... and I say that with shame.

Your family should really get in touch with a lawyer. Right Now.

Damn babe, I hope you do get a lawyer and kick some legal ass. Seriously, thats utterly unacceptable. Really and truly, i hope something gets done about it cause it seriously bothers me that something like that happens so close to home. I live about 45 minutes from albany, and it just drives me crazy when such blatant descrimination happens. You have my suport, if you want me to do anything at al, from writing a letter to just offering my moral suport.

Oh yea! And when are we gonna get together! we live so close it seems a shame for us not to meet and have fun. :p

Write me a PM, i'll send you my number and sometime we can get together and have fun. There is a fun and cute drag show down here on fridays, maybe we could all go just for the fun and open minded enviroment :)

Much loves and support sent your way,

Nikki

TY Nikki:)

This just blew me away. The Albany paper wants to do a story on this and I thought about getting together some members of the GLBT community and supporters and picketing the place or posting fliers through the neighborhood asking if it is a GLBT Friendly community. Honestly any help of how I should handle this would be appreciated. I do not want to get out of control and give {are Kind;)} a worse name. Lawyers are fine and all but I am not in this for the money, Just Justice. It is time to stop the Hate!!!!!

I will give you a PM. Things are still crazy with the whole brother thing right now. I am not in prime form to meet anyone new yet till I get my head back on straight. We will all meet though. Drag show sounds great. Just had one at the campus here last week.

 for your support

You cannot stop hate. It is an emotion and as such exists as long as humans exist in any form that we recognize. Therefore in order to eradicate it you have to deconstruct humanity as we know it, and get rid of all other emotions too.

Is this a residential place? There are fair housing laws, for pete's sake. They don't have to like you, but they can't throw you out.

That's true. If they can throw them out at all, they probably have to have a legitimate reason AND give notice reasonably in advance.

Although, as EL said herself, her family doesn't want to live where they are not wanted.

Don't blame her a bit - but there are damages . . . .

It just doesn't stop does it? You and PJ have had to deal with more shit already....don't blame you for getting hot under the collar. It's sad that some people live such pitiful, shallow lives, their only way to feeling self worth is to attack anothers. That doesn't excuse their behavior or get them off the hook for it by any means. Go for it.

If you need or want to talk...you got the number. :rose:

Woah, what a frustrating story.

Totally unfair. 'Complaints' for holding hands and huggings? *shake head* I wonder how many complaints she really got, or if she was just waiting to get one to give her an excuse to deny you and your gf access to the park.

In any case, this is completly unacceptable.
