Anna Carter

****
What the hell was she doing here anyway?

Anna asked herself over and over as she tried to mingle amongst the rich and famous. She tried to act like she belonged. HA! That was rich...not money rich but rich like..well, you get the picture. She was a small town girl in a world out of her reach. But yet...here she was...

Her life seemed to run on pure luck lately... a job right out of college at a reputable fashion magazine. It was a much needed job due to the fact that starting out in the journalism world required her to take what she could get until she made a name for herself and if it required to be here to get her boss drinks when she ran out then so be it.

It wouldn't be like this all the time...right?

So the dress Anna was wearing was one she had borrowed from a friend who happened to work at a designer store and had, thankfully, let her 'borrow' it tonight, IF and ONLY IF Anna promised to return it without one stain on it. That was fine. She hadn't had a bite to eat all day as it was...thank you nerves!

The emerald green cocktail dress fit like a second skin and even if she wanted to eat, she was afraid that the dress would burst if she moved wrong..being the dress was a size 0 and she wore a size 2... She wore her best heels, ones she saved up for..Louboutins... because every girl had to have a pair of Louboutins.

So Anna found herself at the bar where she didn't dare sit down...instead she stood and tried not to feel and look so out of place. She was almost have tempted to leave right now since her boss had left just 5 minutes prior... OK, maybe one drink for the road..it was an open bar after all.

"Jack and coke, please." She told the bartender and drummed her fingers on the counter as she waited. God, she needed this drink to relax her nerves.

Anna downed that first drink in no time...after a few minutes, she felt a little more at ease...not much but somewhat. With her asking, the bartender refilled her glass. Well..can't let this go to waste she thought as she took a sip from her second glass.

Hunter looked around at the party. It was filled with the same people, talking about the same things. Why were these people so boring. Why did he always invite them to his parties? Why could he not find new friends who actually understood that the Red Wedding is not a fashion trend but one of the most shocking twists ever.

Hunter was resigned as he tried to determine how to fake an injury so he would have to leave his own party. It needed to seem like it hurt, but not actually hurt, but not too much either, because he didn't want to be rushed to the hospital, or worse, have someone stay by his bedside. There were perhaps a few that it might work, but most of the gold diggers would beat back anyone nice.

But then he saw her at the bar. Her dress was quite expensive, but it didn't fit her perfectly, it was snug in some places. But that wasn't the only thing, she had no purse in her hand. He knew many women, and all of the women he knew, would want to show off their matching purse with whatever outfit she were wearing.

This woman, she was different. Hunter had to know who she was. He walked towards her, "Hunter Thomas," he said, reaching out his hand, "I do not believe we've met."

Anna had just finished her second glass of liquor that was put in front of her when she heard the deep voice of someone introducing himself. Slowly, she turned and came face to face...well, in this case, face to chest, with Hunter Thomas, the host of the party.

"Hunter Thomas, I do not believe we've met."

He held out his hand to her and Anna just sat there, dumbfounded. 'Shake his hand, stupid!' a little voice screamed at her. "Ohh..I'm sorry, Mr. Thomas," she said as she took his hand in hers and gave it a firm shake, just like her father had taught her when she was young. OK, so maybe the alcohol was making her not think straight, with a deep breath, Anna composed herself, "No, we've not met..I'm Anna, Anna Carter. I'm Gemma Lamay's assistant...well, one of many that is."

Was she stammering? Yeah, she was. Stupid whiskey.

"I was supposed to leave at the same time of Ms. Lamay but she insisted I stay and enjoy myself." With that, Anna stood, her eyes almost at shoulder level to him, "I guess I should be going now. I don't mean to impose.." seeing as how she knew she didn't belong among this high class crowd. Besides, she needed to return the dress tonight.

There was no way that Thomas was going to let the most interesting person in the party leave before it was concluded. "No, no no. You wouldn't want me to call Gemma and explain how her assistant left almost immediately after her and failed to have a good time?" He roguishly smiled, "And perhaps question if she knows anything about some missing silverware." He winks at that before taking her hand.

"Come, we should dance. At least one, you owe me that much."

Anna was sure her face showed her shock about what he had said about missing silverware, but looking at the devious little glint in his eyes, she couldn't help but return his smile. Standing up, she took his hand and gave him a single nod, "Alright, one dance.."

When he pulled her into his arms, the song the band was playing suddenly turned into a slower song so their movements became slower to match the rhythm. In the back of her mind, Anna thanked her mother for making her take dancing lessons as a child or else she would have surely stepped on his toes by now...

"So, do you always threaten your guests that way?" She asked, feeling the slight light headedness the drinks had given her.

Thomas held the elegant woman tightly against him. One might have thought he had arranged earlier for the band to play something slow but really he hadn't. He smiled playfully at her question, "Of course not, most of my guests are happy to be close to me, but only you wanted to leave almost immediately after meeting me."

His hand slid along her back, keeping her body close to him. She felt so very good he decided, the dress made out of the perfect material that he could feel her body pressed against him. "Besides, my silverware isn't even silver."

She laughed softly at his silverware joke as his touch sent shivers through out her body and voice! She felt the deep rumble in his tone while she was pressed closely against his chest. Anna didn't have any expectations tonight. She had only come tonight in order to assist her boss, never did she expect to be ending the night by dancing with the host.

Anna noticed several people had stopped to watch them dance...suddenly she grew nervous but tried not to show it. Why was she nervous? Probably because she had never been the center of attention before. That and well, she wondered what would happen if what she was doing got back to Gemma.

The song ended and even though she didn't want it to, she was relieved. She pulled away from Hunter and looked up at him, "I really have to go...only because I have to return this dress." She said and laughed as she shook her head, "Oh wow...tell me you just didn't hear that..." Anna looked up at him and figured the cat was already out of the bag..so..."You see, a designer friend let me borrow this because there is no way with my salary could I afford this. And I sort of promised to have it back by 1am..."

"Your fairy godmother at least gave you until 1, my Cinderella." Says Hunter as Anna told her story. "so let me make sure I have this straight, the dress needs to be gone by one, but you can stay longer?" He smiles ever so roguishly. "You know, we can easily fix that problem." He turns around and heads towards the upstairs, he looks back at her, "well come on then."

Anna gave Hunter a puzzled look as she watched him walk a bit away as he beaconed her to follow. She bit her lip and then ended up following him, having no idea what he was doing or leading her to, all she knew was that there were eyes on the both of them.

She got to the top of the stairs, which were--thankfully--away from everyone else. She looked around a bit, impressed and in awe of his collection of art. Although she was no art critic by any means, she knew these paintings were quite expensive.

"Hunter?" she called out as she headed down the hall, the buzz of the party disappearing behind her, "Hunter? I really need to get going..."

"No, no, no" she can hear Hunter saying from further down the hall. "The dress needs to go, so that you can stay." A sudden burst of light fills the hallway as Hunter flips a switch, illuminating the room he is in. "Yes, this should do nicely."

Inside the room there are quite a number of dresses. Hunter holds up a red one as he hands it to her. "I do believe this one is your size."

"You might be wondering about all of the dresses. You see, I do like to have these parties and what happens is sometimes a woman gets a stain on her dress." He points downstairs, "for many of those women, that will be the end of a good night and the end of a good night for everyone else. Thus I ordered extra dresses, any dress gets a stain, no problem, run upstairs and get a different one."

He shakes his head, "These days I think a few times they purposely spill so they can get a dress."

Anna listened to his explanation of everything behind the storage of the dresses. It seemed to make sense in his eyes so, why question it? Taking the offered dress from Hunter, Anna held it away from her and then looked back at Hunter.

"This is an Ashley dress!" She exclaimed and looked at Hunter, "This dress is easily six grand!" She pushed it back to him, "Are you cra--" she stopped herself in time and sighed, "OK... it's just for a while." He ushered her to a dressing room at the end of the room and left her to change.

A few minutes later she returned and had the other dress on the hanger. The man had an eye for size as the new dress fit her so perfectly. She could breathe! "There and thank you. It fits." She couldn't help but model it for him by turning in front of him. "Now what?"

Hunter was holding his breath as he waited for the lovely woman to exit. As she twirled around, modeling the dress, he let out the breath. It was certainly quite breathtaking. He had chosen well.

"Now what? Well obviously I have an app for that." Hunter pulls out his phone and activates an app.

A minute later a man shows, "Yes Mr Thomas?"

Hunter takes the dress from Anna and hands it to the man. "This dress needs to be returned tonight." He looks over at Anna, wanting the name and address where it was to go.

"Summon butler app." Says Thomas with a smile.

Anna gave the address to where the dress was to be delivered, she turned to Hunter, "You're a gadgets man, I see...."

The dress he picked out for her fit really well. She leaned against the door and crossed her arms in front of her, "So, I guess we should return to the party now...your guests are bound to be missing you by now."

Hunter laughs at Anna's comment. "There is plenty of alcohol down there, they won't miss me for awhile." He admired the beauty as she leaned against the door. "We can be gone for quite a long time."

"But to answer your other question, "I am very much a gadget man. If there is an app for that, I have it, or else I have it designed." He moves towards her, putting his hand on the door behind her as he looks down at her, "If you'd like I can show you around."

Hell, what did she have to lose? The dress was on it's way back so she wouldn't be getting into trouble. Why not let loose, even for just one night. Smiling, Anna nodded as she stood up straight, "Sure, I'd like that"

She took his offered arm as she walked with him out of the room with all the dresses and into the hall, "You have some great works of art out here..." she commented as they walked slowly, arm in arm.

Hunter glances at the artwork. "Thank you very much." He pauses as he looks at one. "I wish I could take credit for purchasing them, but it was my interior designer." He patted her hand as they walked. "She said I needed to show money in all things and while I might like dragons, paintings of them do not win people over."

"Now this room is one of my favorites." The room they enter has a giant television, comfortable chairs. "You've never seen excitement until a giant zombie comes across the screen."
