It Does Or It Doesnt

I'm just curious why gay marriage involves you taking a bite out of anything.

How does allowing gays to marry each other affect you?

I have often wondered why some persons are so adamantly opposed to gay marriage. There are some who believe gay sex is an abomination, and I disagree with them, but I can, at least, see where they are coming from. :( Outside of that, why should society care one way or another. If anything, they should be in favor, because it's generally better to have members of that society involved in stable relationships. Marriage is always more stable than living together, even in a committed relationship, and is better for whatever children are involved. :)

I dont want anyone to compromise their principles and values; no one is served well when we bend over and grab our ankles all the time. On the otherhand if I'm expected to take a big bite of a shit sandwich I expect others to enjoy a bite as well.

So if I take a bite of same-sex marriage I want your team to back away from its blind allegience to, say, teacher unions and tenure. Or its loyal support of meddling socialworkers. They lead the vanguard that oppresses families.

I for one, don't particularly like unions, at least when they stray from strictly promoting the interests of the workers (which SHOULD include helping the company to stay financially healthy, and should NOT include political activity. ) Nor do I think that government workers should be unionized.

I expect that those positions are not inimical to yours....so answer my slavery question, now please.

What's at issue here?

Well, which is it? Federal Law prevails or the issue is a State Right? So far Gays wanna play both sides.

Seems to me that gays want the right that straights have, the right to marry. Seems to me they want the discrimination to go away. Which seems to be the point of trying to toss out Prop. 8.

It seems that the over riding principle is that the right to marry is an inherent right. That is, once you reach the age of majority. Tossed that in lest JBJ go chimp, yet again. The Supreme Court has made that clear many times. So what's the big deal here? The states get to decide or the feds get to decide? Don't think so.

For my two bits worth, the big deal is whether the Constitution and the Supreme court says the right to marry is inherent or it isn't.

Just my $0.02

When I think of the Gay marriage issue, I think about the Benefits or drawbacks of what we call 'Marriage'. The Measurable benefits. - you can't measure 'Going to Hell' or other similar Religious arguments. Neither can you measure other morality based arguments. That leaves financials as the only measurable basis with which to judge the differing sides of the argument. You can, albeit laborously, measure 'child support and care', and boil it down to a dollar value. You can measure 'access to pension and health care benefits'.

When I think about the question "Should Gay and Lesbian unions or marriages be sanctioned by the state (or federal) government. I rephrase the question like this: "Should the government grant financial incentives to any arbitrary two people, on the basis that they say 'I Do?'"

The argument 'for' might be "Hell yes!". I can understand this to a point. The assumption here is that the two arbitrary people are supposed to 'Love one another'. Yet the strange thing is, 'Love' is another of those unmeasurable, qualitative variables. You can't measure it. All you can do is take a person's word that it's there.

I await the day when two arbitrary people are allowed to gain financial benefit from saying 'I do' solely on the basis that married they can compete in a certain market, and un-married, they cannot, or can't compete as effectively - a perversion of our capitalistic system.

Some might say 'so what?', yet others will say 'That won't happen' - to those I say "once the door is open, any vermin is free to walk right in." As example, wasn't it Texas republicans that used anti terror laws and the Department of Homeland Security to track down democratic legislators, in what could be the most dramatic filibuster in U.S. history? Here in Arizona, the state voted to incentivise the purchase of propane and propane/gasoline duel fuel vehicles, with the aim of reducing gas consumption and cleaning the atmosphere. All lofty goals. The result: people buying Lincolns, Hummers, any type of gas guzzling pig of a vehicle, and having the dealer install a small propane tank, and enough hardware that you could actually drive it. Arizona damn near went broke before they stopped the program. So what happened? Almost no one uses the propane systems installed, the government heavily subsidized the purchase of those vehicles, much to the purchaser's delight, and there's a bunch of SUV's driving around town with 'alt fuel' license plates or stickers that allow them what amounts to a free pass in the HOV lane.

What I'm saying is, if a law's on the books, it will, at some point, be perverted, by someone, into something it wasn't meant to be. Wish for what you want, work towards those aims, but be careful, we might all 'get it.'

You assume that somewhere on the planet there is a society perfect in your estimation, and you want to impose your perfect place on everyone else, and demand that they cherish it as you do.

I oppose same-sex marriage becuz Gays want it and actively oppose issues that are near & dear to me. When they soften their attitude I'll become more agreeable, but until then my attitude prevails across America and it sux to be them. One hand washes the other; jail every social worker and I'll feel like cooperating.

Okay, you got a deal.

Why didn't you say so sooner?

I've said it 3-4 times in the last year. You dont get shit for you unless there's something in it for the other guy. Gays havent learned this yet. When they do they'll likely get more of what they want.

Back in 1965 I worked for a campaign to elect the first black in Florida's history. Our community was as Southern and traditional as they come. We prevailed because we had the correct position. We didnt say ELECT BILL BLACKSHEAR CUZ ITS ONLY FAIR, we said ELECT BILL BLACKSHEAR AND HE WONT STEAL YOUR EFFING MONEY LIKE HIS OPPONENTS WILL and BILL BLACKSHEAR KNOWS WHAT ITS LIKE TO BE SCREWED BY THE FAT-CATS, AND HE WONT DO IT TO YOU. And he won cuz he sincerely wanted to improve the whole community, and people set their racism aside to try his wares.

So, do you support slavery, or do you think it was a GOOD idea for America to change its mind?

No, I dont advocate slavery.

America never changed its mind about slavery, it traded slavery for something much worse that lasted a long time. After the 13th Amendment emancipated slaves they immediately had nuthin nor anyone obligated to care for them. They kept right on picking cotton and the planter had no legal responsibility to house, feed, clothe, or medicate women, children, and geezers as before. Their Yankee liberators then passed laws allowing sheriffs to arrest blacks and lease them as conscript labor without pay. Sheriffs and judges got their pay.

What the fuck are you drooling about?

Well hey, there IS an answer, I know you could do it. Whose a good boy?!

So it's a bargaining chip. Got it. You don't care for or against against gay marriage per se. You just want your pork.

I doubt you are in the majority among the anti gay crowd. But hey, at least you got a rationale, childish as it may be.

This post brought to you by the "dog in the manger" party.

A life of dissatisfaction up to this point, with no likely change in the future. Be sure to leave specific burial instructions, so the rest of us can be certain to give you shot at getting what you want.

The really funny part about this post is the idea there is enough room inside your head for something near and dear.

It really sucks to be you.

Unless you can show me that there's a significant amount of other people out there with nothing but pork on their minds, I'll pass.

From what I can see, most people's position on this issue actually has to do with, you know, the issue.

Which renders you irrelevant.

I lost an election by one vote, once upon a time. I know a woman who lost an election by 4 votes. I'm relevant when the vote is close.

Money has nothing to do with this issue. If it did, people would be for gay marriage because it would mean more weddings with all their trappings. When Prop. 8 was on the ballot, the state budget analysis showed that if the initiative lost, it would mean millions of additional dollars to the state economy, but it still won.

Of course, millions of dollars would be a fart in a tornado compared to the state budget, but gay marriages would have resulted in a positive cash flow.
