I have Prodigy, it's not so bad.. but they've recently 'merged' with Yahoo.. and now i'm in Yahell

This new Yahoo is primarily Internet Explorer based, and anyone up to date on my retarded system, knows that I cannot get IE on my computer. No if's, and's or but's for the time being.

Does anyone recommend an ISP that has unlimited access for no more than $25/ mo. I have just a regular 56K modem, so none of this fancy cable/ DSL stuff for the old lickeroni.

Much appreciated :)

P.S. I don't like AOL, or MSN.

I would

check the phone book for a local company. Before I went to a cable modem, we had a local isp that offered us incrediable service for under $20.00 a month. Call them and ask them for some references..any reputable company would give them to you.

I use Earthlink. I get a discount as we also use Sprint for our long distance. I have never had any problems with it, but then I use a DSL, not theirs, to hook up to the net. I like the Earthlink package. I don't use IE, Earthlink has their own...

I use ATT. $21.95 per month, unlimited access. There were a few problems awhile back, but it is generally very good. I like the email with it, very business-like. Compared to AOL for example that looks like a kid's game to me.

You can sign up for it online at the ATT website.

ATT is a good one in Indiana any way, fast connect and only 19.95 a month here. It is not crowded like some of the bigger isp's.

I was going to suggest the same thing. They advertise as only $9.95/month!!

www.juno.com

I dumped Juno and went to Prodigy, because Juno raised my rates to 29.95 a month, added a pop-up to advise me they raised my rate, left the pop-up running for four months, and then canceled my service when I asked why the pop-up persisted for so long.

Juno is also Ad supported and downloads about 7 Meg of ads to your computer each months. (If you use Ad-Awareto kill the ads, Juno won't work.)

I hven't gotten the new software for SBC Yahoo Dial yet, but I may be looking for a new ISP when I do -- it all depends on how intrusive their "advance features" are. Their "Advanced features" supposedly include "integrated instant messenger" -- which I don't want or need 'cause I don't IM -- and a bunch of other AOL wannabe features I neither want nor need.

I have to agree about juno, I haven't heard a single thing good about them. stay away from AOL.

go with AT&T Worldnet. I never had a problem with them and they are a real ISP. custom software if you need it, or just a phone number if you don't (I didn't), they don't care what software you run, what OS or anything else, you just dial up and they give you an IP address. That is real refreshing in these days of Co-branding and megamergers. I used them for 2 years before I got cable/dsl a couple of years ago, and I STILL reccomend them. That's how much they impressed me with thier simplicity.

We've got SBC Global......

It does cost $49.95 a month, but the service is great! I can access a local # from anywhere in the world to the internet at no additional cost! The only interruptions is at home due to the suckassed system in the lake! The bottom of the lake! Only happends when it raind hard, other than that it's great!

I have DSL Extreme - DSL service that I have is $39.99 a month...and their dialup is only $9.99 a month, if you pay for a year in advance. I think they're available only in Southern CA, though... You can find out more at www.dslextreme.com .

I forgot to mention that ATT Worldnet service that I have also has local access lines around the world to get into the internet. I didn't get the impression that Licky travels all tht much though so she probably doesn't even need that feature.

Ok, so like.. I have it narrowed down to Earthlink (has anyone had any negative issues with them?) and AT&T.

Kinda of wondering though.. I don't have cable through my house for TV.. is it expensive for computer line? Is it any faster than my 56K? What's the diffeence between cable and DSL?

(and no, Chey, I don't do any travelling :))

We used to have Earthlink, because they bought out the ISP that bought out the ISP that bought out all of the local ISP's in my area.

The service was pretty good, but we wanted to pay by check and they apparently weren't set up to handle that too well.

Cable/DSL -- AKA broadband connections -- are generally about twice as expensive as dial-up service. At least the options I've checked out here in Las Vegas run about twice what Prodigy does. Combined Digital Cable TV and Cable Modem service runs my daughter about $60/month through Cox Communictions.

A lit page loads in about 5-20 seconds, depending on how many pictures there are in the thread. At my daughter's, the same page loads in about 2-5 seconds. Yes, broadband is a LOT faster than you 56K dial-up connection.

Cable uses a coaxial cable that also carries your TV signal to connect you (and all of your neighbors) to an ISP server. The cable modem is connected to your computer via a network card and/or a "router"

DSL (Direct Subscriber Line) connects to your computer through similar network arrangement as Cable does, but uses a special second phone line to connect to the ISP server. There is no dial tone or ring on a DSL line as it is always "off-hook." The speed is comparable to cable.

Well, I am assuming you are talkng about dial-up. If so I have been extrordinarily pleased with Earthlink. (and I do use IE)

I have however heard some scary things about Earhtlink from some other parts of the country. In the past 6 years or so I have never failed to connect, never had problems with email (except one), and always had good solid download speeds, again for dial-up.

As for the ONE problem I did have, my email had blocked up and wasn't downloading my emails. I called the 800 number and got a REAL LIVE person in 3 rings, she went through my email on the server with me and we found the message that was causing the error (it was junkmail) she deleted it and then my email worked fine. THEN she told me of a website that allowed me to directly download my email off the server if this sould happen again to me so I could delete the offending little bugger myself.

For these reasons they have a customer right up until I switch to broadband and then I will most definately try their service first.

I seem to remember that in the town you live in, there is an ISP that offers inexpensive 'net access and is sponsored by the city library or at least by Oregon. My brother, who lives in the same city as you do, had them for a while until he caught his kids surfing porn sites and shut it down.

Check the "unlimited" claims closely - most have some kind of limit, the only one I know for sure offers unlimited dialup access is AOL, and they suck.

Oh, and try to get an ISP that doesn't force you to use their software. There is always Netscape.

We use Earthlink here and I wouldn't dream of changing it. For now we have a dial up until the phone company decides to get off their blasted asses and fix the boxes so we can get DSL and that will be through Earthlink as well.

I have to agree with dreamer on this one...the only time I had to call in I got a live person quickly and the problem was handled within 10 or 15 minutes. :)
