Hello all,
I recall reading a story many years back (pretty sure I came across it on alt.sex.stories in the mid-1990's), and was reminded of it recently when the movie "Lucy" came out, since there are some parallels between the powers developed by the protagonists.
In the story I am trying to find again, the male protag starts realizing his perceptions are gradually expanding, both into the realm of larger and smaller phenomena - he can see microscopically, eventually down to sub-atomic levels; he can feel/perceive through walls, the neighborhood, the city, the world, the solar system... In addition to growing perception, he also gains control over the scaled phenomena he perceives - ability to bend light to become 'invisible', ability to levitate objects, manipulate atoms, etc.
The story follows him as he struggles to figure out how to live with these growing powers. I recall an iffy foray into superheroism, a rocky relationship with a girlfriend (her awful parents piss him off at some point, and he 'unmakes' them by pulling apart their molecular structure or teleporting them somewhere inhospitable and irretrievable - she can't forgive him and they break up). He eventually decides to help the world by scrubbing the atmosphere of excess carbon, forming it into spheres of diamond that he sends rocketing out into space.
As I recall, he ends up disconnected from humanity (a la Dr Manhattan from Watchmen), and when his perception expands to the extent that he notices another set of diamond spheres rocketing on a different trajectory, thus tipping him off that he is not the only such powered being in the universe (galaxy?). He then departs to explore and find him/her/them to try to find some answers as to how/why he has developed these powers.
I've tried to search on a.s.s.t.r. a couple times, but either my search terms are lousy, my memory is faulty, the search engine is limited, or the story isn't in their archive. I've poked through the lit search as well with no luck.
Anyone else remember this story? Can you tell me the title and/or author, or even better tell me where to find it now?
I posted this message to the general list before I noticed this forum specifically for these requests. Moderators: please remove the other posting in favor of this one.
Thanks much,
M
