I heard somewhere that in Mississippi I think that if a man has an erection in public that he can be arrested for indecent exposure. I wonder if thats true too...

yes always amazed me that counrtries still have such laws; I blame the puritans! curiously, here in the old country, anal sex is legal between men but not male-to-female ...we also have 16 as the age of consent for hetero sex, and are working the homosexual sex age down from 21 where it was to 18 and hopefully it will also get down to 16.

Isn't this the same state that runs a multi-million dollar TV tourism campaign advertising that Virginia is for lovers?

I better never go to Virginia!!! I'd be a multiple felon.....like every day I would commit a felony!! SHIT!!!!! FUCK!!!!! DAMN!!!!

Remind me, ya'll to never ever go to Virginia!!

ROTFLMAO!!! They do indeed! I guess it's for lovers, so long as you don't actually do any loving there...

The idea behind the bill is basically to go after gays - by making all other forms of sex besides actual intercourse (basically, sodomy - oral and anal) a felony, then you can convict gays as felons. It makes me sick that in this country there's are not only people this sick, but they decide the laws of some states. Hateful, bigoted, backwards, ignorant, stupid bunch Virginia is. I will never go there, and will discourage everyone I know from vacationing there (as if all my friends are just DYING to go! LOL!)

Argh. Unbelievable that such legalized bigotry exists in America today. Makes me wanna move to Mars.

Laurel,

Almost every state in the union has a plethora of outdated and mind boggling laws still on the books. Do a search - and you will find some of the most bizzare crap you can imagine.

An example, in Texas they have these city's who were given "home rule" charters. These city's still have them. What that basically means is that the city - does not have to answer to state authorities. So if there is corruption or other inane crap going on, the state has no jusrisdiction. Only federal agencies have any sway. This can get real hairy depending on the situation.

My grandfather gave me a book on law when I was young, inside of it there was a paperback that listed these type of laws that are on the books, I wish I still had it. If anyone knows of the book I'm refering too, please reply with the name. I'd like to find it again.

True, but usually when they're confronted with the laws, they're nullified. But in this case, a bill came up in the Virginia legislature to reduce the Crime of Sodomy (this applies to everyone, even married couples) from a felony to a misdemeanor and the legislature voted the bill DOWN. That's the sick bit.

Hey Hawksview, In a small town in Western North Carolina, it is illegal to: (a) herd a flock of turkeys down main street(b) use profanity in public and (c) swim in the river in a suit and tie. Oh brother, what next ?

I think that that is one of those laws those laws that are in book, but not really enforced. In a some southern states, there are still laws on the book saying that it's illegal to marry interracially, and I know there's a law in one state. I bet the very same lawmakers, who claim, it's so immoral, are getting it from their mistresses.

True, they probably wouldn't enforce it on a married husband and wife, but I do think they'd enforce it on a gay couple caught in the act... From reading the article, that seems to be the gist of why the legislature refused to strike down the law - something like "it's not a Constitutional right to be a homosexual". How totally fucking backwards. I'm ashamed for my country.

One State (I forgot wich one) has A law against Adultry, and you can go to prison for up to 3yrs. Just for a 1 night stand. I remember reading this a few years ago, about the adultry that is. Oh and this law only pertained to women, men could do what they wanted when they wanted. What a sexest state!

I am amazed that they can even contemplate legislation designed to target a group of persons on the basis of their sexual orientation - if that is indeed the basis. That alone would / should surely be subjected to scrutiny on the grounds that it violates their right not to be discriminated against.

I agree Laurel - its shameful. Is Virginia a comparatively conservative state, compared to the others? But even so, surely even conservative creatures are able to see and then avoid the dangers of enacting unfair legislation. Even conservative people are not immune from constitutional scrutiny.

Speaking of strange and outdated laws, in the town where I grew up (I'm 27), it was against the law to have a public dance within the city limits. The high school prom had to be held in another county.

And most of you probably thought FOOTLOOSE was just a movie with a made-up premise...

As a sidenote, the law was taken off the books only a few years ago.

Many states still have certain "blue laws" (such as restricting alcohol sales on Sunday or after 2am) in effect, although I would venture to say most are Southern.

As for the Sodomy Law in Virginia, I'm curious as to how this would be enforced. I sincerely doubt there will be a "Sphincter Police" breaking down doors or spying in windows. ("Open up! We KNOW what you're doing in there!")

Being caught having plain ol' hetero sex in public is a crime.

I do, however, get your point, Laurel.

Random insane quotes from the article (emphases are mine):

"You know and I know that there are no police in the bedroom. (But) this is a time for strengthening the moral fiber of the Commonwealth. Reducing the penalty won't do that." The Committee didn't - on Feb. 23, they killed a proposal, which passed the House of Delegates, that would have reduced oral sex or sodomy even between legally married couples to a legal misdemeanor from a felony...

...But there's still a legal challenge at the state Court of Appeals, the paper says, mounted by twelve men who were arrested in a police sting in Roanoke. And three other men, the paper continues, convinced trial juries the law is used to discriminate against gays and lesbians despite the law written to cover heterosexual and homosexual acts alike...

...Arlington delegate Karen Darner has tried on several occasions to introduce legislation to repeal the law, which covers even private, consenting adults engaged in oral or anal sex even if legally married. Prostitutes, however, are punished less severely. Darner this time proposed to modify the law down to misdemeanors punishable by $250 fines, rather than felonies drawing up to five years behind bars and fines up to $2,500. Felony convictions usually mean loss of voting rights and many professional credentials...

...The Times-Dispatch says pressure on Republican senators from social and religious conservatives killed the bill in the Senate committee One, Robin Dejarnette, told the panel the U.S. Supreme Court ruled there was no constitutional right to engage in homosexual acts, referring to Bowers v. Hardwick in 1986 - even though Justice Lewis Powell, when he retired, said the strength of the arguments now meant he should have sided with the minority. That case involved a man who was arrested for his bedroom life - a Georgia gay man, Michael Hardwick, arrested for having sex in his own home.

Thats very interesting, but bizarre. I laughed at your emphasis of the men who "mounted" the appeal.

I guess that gives a whole new meaning to the line from, I think it was "Deer Hunter"..

"Boy, you got a real pretty mouth"

Ummmmm...no Hawks, actually that's from "Deliverance"..Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, Deviant Hillbillies..."Squeal...squeal like a pig!"

Gotta wonder if they cut that page from the script when they offered the part to Beatty...lol

Havoc

Oh and BTW...it's okay for me to call Hillbillies deviants....because I just happen to be a Deviant Hillbilly myself

*thinking for a second* Of course, just to be clear, that doesn't mean I wanna commit anal rape on Ned Beatty...ah hell I think I'm only digging myself in deeper here.

Hi Havoc. Which part of the States was deliverance filmed in? Do you know? Are there communities like that in those parts today?

To my knowledge, DELIVERANCE was filmed in Tennessee and Kentucky.

Filmed in Georgia real close to where the Olympics were held.....

Anyway, Virginia has finally lost its mind...it would figure however, that a ultra right winged, neo nazi, born again southern Baptist wannabe would push something like that. I used to think Viriginia was a pretty cool place to be, but it looks like the folks who run it are treading water in the shallow end of the gene pool (Sorry if I offended someone, I just get burned up when someone tries to force his/her "moral" beliefs on everybody else)
