He also got it backwards:
Elvis was the exception to the rule: one of the few White singers -particularly male- who could ever hit those notes.

Some of the most soulful pieces in related genres were interpreted by Black singers. One can't beat those notes.

But I like the debates around him, because they are a springboard for debates and they bring up all sorts of interesting issues - differences in worldviews, perceptions, cultures. Mine is a very PC and inhibited environment.

I suspect that there were more Black singers just as, or even better than Elvis, but Elvis was given preference because of his ethnicity and looks.
- I think that the casting decision was driven by viewership, not racism: given the 90:10 demographics at the time.
Their racism could have been about not giving enough credit to the ethnic group that they appropriated the genre from.


Re the article:

It has a grain of truth in it: when I googled "medal of freedom", I saw that Trump gave it to a White baseball player, a White singer and a doctor-philantropist, casino owner & Republican donor.
-- I'm sure that Miriam Adelson has done good things, but there are more people more deserving that she is. And given what the medal stands for, Trump should have at least mentioned the Black roots of most of Elvis's songs.

But what the article does is: it starts by criticizing Trump, but it ends by taking shots at Elvis and rehashing the racist past of America, and controversies surrounding Elvis.
One gets the sense that the reporter is more interested in increasing the current splitting between the two ethnic groups, than in Trump.

My dad is like, weirdly obsessed with Elvis in that way that a lot of old white guys are, and I never got it. Like not just, "I like this music and I have a couple posters" level obsessed, like fucking stalker level obsessed. Like why did I, as a child, know this dude's stillborn brother's name? Why was I aware of who Jesse Garon was? Why did I need to know this whole backstory with the twinless twin thing and like- genuinely why was I being told what Elvis dreamed about before he died?

That's some fucked up shit right there. I mean, the music was fine, but it was almost all covers. I'm not saying he couldn't sing, I just don't understand why he's like... King of Pop. He's fine, he's not great.

But I also didn't live it, and I get that that's a big part of it. That it wasn't somuch the actual music as it was just the stage presence and charisma and all that, and if you weren't alive for it, you would just never get it. Because a LOT of people have told me that that's my problem, but then also- I'm almost 100% sure that those motherfuckers ain't never gone to see Elvis even when he was alive. So that's weird.
