I just heard today that it's the norm there for checkout staff to have to work standing up in American. Is this really a thing??

yep. about the only exception i know of is aldi which is, of course, not an american company.

eta: and, yeah, it sucks. when i was a cashier my knee would lock up from standing in the same position for three to four hours at a time. i'd have to kick several times just to get it moving again. fucking hated it.

Why would they do that  nobody makes accountants stand up in one spot all day.

Weird, innit? I've commented on it to LTR when I've been over there.

Of course, workers' rights are utterly shit in the US on all sorts of things. Try telling a yank that you get five weeks paid leave as standard and they look at you like you're winding them up.

the excuse i always heard was that sitting down made us look lazy. that and for some reason they thought it would impede our ability to do pointless busy work when there was no one to ring up.

There's a terribly obese woman at my CVS that has a stool. That's the only one I've seen sitting down.

They don't even give them the rubber mats to stand on...so it is concrete

I've been on my feet all working day, and it's fine when you're on the move, but this makes no sense... no sense.

Do accountants look lazy?
Do varicose veins improve efficiency?
Is the opinion of a few cunts more important than worker welfare?
And... do they understand that, once seated, you can still always stand up again?

Ok, I can honestly say i never worried about whether the person ringing me up was lazy or not. As long as they did their job properly, and weren't rude, how is it my business??

I can't recall ever seeing a cashier/checker sitting down on the job other than at Aldi.

cashiers aren't people, silly. they're just a part of the machine that talks and occasionally needs to take a bathroom break.

All the retail positions I held required you to be behind the cash register standing or on the floor helping customers. Nothing like pulling the 12:00 p.m. to close at Sears back in the day when it was cool and busy. But I was also 16.

But I can't think of ever seeing anyone with a stool or anything at any retail place I've been. American companies are rather shit to their employees...when they aren't outsourcing overseas.

Standing is better for you. Sitting is the new smoking.

Standing still isn't good for you. For one, there's no heart in your feet, and so if you're not walking the blood pools, gives you varicose veins and causes fatigue.

In most UK supermarkets, cashiers sit on a swivel chair. Only those serving behind counters such as Deli or Fish, are standing.

At one time my wife worked in Tesco's, most people used a seat with casters, but she mostly stood.
