I recently installed ICQ and have a small buddy list. For the second day in a row,(I have had it for two days) people have hopped on and started talking to me. Is this a normal occurence or am I just lucky? Just wondering

when you select "free for chat" as your status, you're literally asking to chat.

Yep!

That is normal.

It can be a bit like being molested! Gets a bit crazy :)

Not unusual when your authorization is set so as that anyone can add you to their list and you are visiable there are users that will talk to about anyone.

Here's whatcha do

Go to "Security and Privacy" on your icq menu

Go to the general tab and select "my authorization is required before users add me to their contact list"

That will keep everyone and their cat from adding you. Also, when selecting your availability status, choose "available" not "available for chat".

Get Trillian, it's much better - It lets you talk to people on ICQ, MSN, AOL, Yahoo, and IRC! And it's simplier to use too!

ICQ used to be the best chat program untill AOL bought it. It was getting a little bloated before then and now it is the definition of bloatware.

Just use trillian it combines all the popular chat programs, including MIRC, into one program.

Thank you for the technical advice, I was trying to play around with it to figure it out, when people started jumping in.

Yes , Trillian is the way to go, unless you already have some of the messengers set up, such as Yahoo. Sometimes if you do, it will not integrate your existing yahoo with itself.

ICQ rocks!

But *ahem* now I have to check out Trillian :0Þ

I am just checking ICQ out , but so far so good. Trillian is excellent, makes it easier to keep in touch and one screen for all the messengers , not 5 or 6 different ones.
