Okay, a couple days ago I finally checked out one of these sites where you are supposed to make money by opening emails and stuff like that... They show you these pics of laptops and digital cameras... well, then you have to sign up for this and that (free, except pay for shipping). You have to participate in so many 'offers' before you can be eligible... oh and the surveys... they say you are now entered in to win so and so amount...

Anyway... Is this stuff just a gimmick for suckers like me?
Anybody out there actually done this stuff?

I couldn't help but think, as I clicked on another ad, "I could be using this time to try and write something new... or at least thinking about trying to write something new... or jerking off thinking about what I may think of writing...

I'm really usually the high brow skeptic type... but I was also talked into joining the military long ago... I think they are the same breed. "Hmm, yeah, I could be an international undercover agent."

But I bet the army didn't promise you an iPod if you joined up.

It was actually the air force, but that's a trivial matter (I did not specify). Nonetheless, they didn't have iPods back then.

But really I don't often fall for such things.

Well, it's all a matter of profit and loss. My first question with suspected scams is "how do these guys make their profit?"

My sister is disabled, spends many hours a day on her bed, the rest in a wheelchair. She does this survey stuff on line, accumulates points, which are then redeemable for cash.

This is not a joke.

This is for real.

I guess it's a question of what you can earn in other ways. Mat's sister presumably doesn't have a lot of options, and it suits her. But my guess is that it ends up being pretty poorly paid for the effort you'd end up putting in.

I'm sure you've seen the hand-written cardboard signs tied to lampposts and traffic-lights that offer the same kind of telemarketing jobs. They pay cash, but I doubt if you end up seeing more than a small fraction of what they promise.

The stuff where you have to complete certain offers (like join book clubs or something of the like) to get the prizes are scams.

However, if you're talking about actual survey sites like MySurvey, E-Poll, etc... they are not scams. You can actually accumulate points like Mat says that are good for a variety of things (cash, gift certificates, prizes...), and as far as I know, it doesn't cost you a thing but your time (no shipping costs.)
