Maybe I'm a sad lonely person but I seem to get ignored. My question (which isn't a dig at anyone)... Is this board elitist?

PS. Prove me wrong but if you post a reply don't flame me unless you want to show your true self ;)

DL, welcome. Excuse me please, but we've been through this too many times. I see you only have 5 posts, just how sensitive are you? Introducing yourself as sad and lonely isn't going to get you too much attention without any other attractive features put out there.

Be a grown-up, speak up, hang around and get to know people first, just like in real life, only here you can say what you like.

I didn't vote because none of the statements were right for me.

regards, Perdita

hmmm

Hi Perdita,

Boy! It's nice to be treated like an adult. I'm 30 with kids and a family. Yes I have posted only a few times but for me it's quality that counts not the quantity :p

Also, I have posted in the NaNo thread... a nice response that got...

So you're telling me have to post XXX amount of times to show my allegiance. Who's the grown up?

PS. I can take whatever so I'm not having a dig, just asking a question. Also ask yourself.. why has this topic been gone through so many times?

Dear Dar,
I don't think so. If you will look at the your number of posts, I think you would conclude that you're a couple hundred shy of knowing what's going on around here.

That last sentence sort of chapped by heart shaped bottom, though. It's a good thing I'm not the type of person who ever flames anyone.
MG

Thanks for the response

Hi Mat,

Thanks for your reponse. Because I don't post doesn't mean I can't read.

I am interested to know what it is about my last sentence you didn't like. As long as what you argue is fair and objective I wouldn't consider it a flame (and I hope others wouldn't either).

The meaning of flaming (in my eyes) is arguing for the sake of arguing and throwing about personal insults for the sake of it.I would like to think you wouldn't do that :)

DL, I aplogize for anything I said that offended you. I did think I was speaking to an adult so I wrote like one. I'm 57 and have grown kids for whatever it's worth. I haven't read half the posts on the NaNo thread because I'm writing a novel. Posting on the AH now is a break for me.

I think Maths answered you re. post numbers. Quality of reading and listening is as important as writing.

The topic comes up because some people feel left out, just like in real life. You'll make friends or you won't, and not everyone will be one big happy family. Just like...

Perdita

Let me start out my introducing myself. I am Destinie 21 and no the board is not elitist. But that said it's not a place you come to be coddled at least not initially. Yes we do poke fun at each other and we do get into arguments and debates because we're all different. The most "Adult" thing about this board is people's ability to get over whatever differences they might have. (there are of course a very few exceptions but I will not posin pen anyone) The thing to do is post what you think and deal with the consequences. I say the latter only to say this interpretation and intent are two different things so in some cases you may need to explain what a post meant. In anycase welcome and g'luck.;)

Math,

Just curious, so that means I'm halfway to knowing exactly how clueless I really am?

Respectfully,
Whisper :rose:

Ps. Oops...welcome and *hugs* Damn, I really do fit the second choice...*mutter*

Unless you are writing a 50,000 word novel during the month of Novemeber, you have no reason to expect answers in the NaNo Thread. That's their support thread.

I have several good friends in that worm wrestle, but I stay out of the NaNo thread because I don't wish to disturb them while they're communing with their Muse.

In the two and a half years since I joined, EVERYTHING has been gone through MANY times.

Probably everyone is waiting until you ask THE QUESTION . ;)

That seems to be our current Initiation Exercise.

Thanks Perdita and Hi to Destinie

Hi again Perdita,

Thanks for the apology... I'm also taking part in Nano as is Tatelou. We're both writing novels as you know (both 32K now).

All that I wish is that people are acknowledged when they post. For example in the Nano thread some provide feedback on excerpts but when they post their own, they receive nothing. In my eyes its just good manners to acknowledge the previous poster.
Maybe I'm a fussy old Brit ;)

Also thanks for the response Destinie. I see what you what you are driving at. I do value that aspect from what I have read on the boards. That's the reason I posted what I thought (and be damned the consequences ;) )

DL, see, I didn't know you were a NaNo. I am seeing double as I've been writing all weekend. As for me, I do not expect a response from everyone re. my excerpts, we'd all be spending all our time doing that otherwise - yikes, there's 22 or so of us.

Welcome again, take what you like from anyone's comments, or none.

Perdita

p.s. some of my best friends are brits, or englishpeople, or anglo or celtic or something, even Yorkshire ;)

Hi Whisper,

Yes you do fit the second choice, which to me is a good thing :)

Dear Da,
I think you got off on the wrong foot when you started this thread with that 'elitist' question. That's sort of like walking into a bar where you've never been before and shouting, "Hay, are you people all assholes?"

Also, each of your first few posts had a defensive and/or threatening statement. That brings about a counter-reaction in someone who reads it.

I don't know what sort of response you expected when you came here, but you have obviously been disappointed. Sorry.

Hi!
I wouldn't call this board elitistic. Just a little bit too whimsical at times, and a little bit too easy on the trigger-fingewr sometimes. But hey, that's part of the charm.

We're not a kissy-huggy bunch per se though. We talk about stuff. Mostly stuff that more or less writing oriented, and other random stuff too. If you have opinions and experiences about stuff that you can share, you'll fit right in. (I haven't looked up your posts, so I don't know what you have posted before. I'm one of the NaNo slaves too, so I miss quite a lot of the action here these days.)

Anyway, welcome in.

Mat,

mm...I'm not sure I got off on the wrong foot because I initially posted in the Nano thead. Believe me they are there! :)

My questions have never been defensive. I have no need to defend myself to anyone other than my wife (who you all know!). Though they may have been confrontational which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I also don't think anyone of you are 'arse'holes. Come to think of it there are very few people in this world I would put in that category. Maybe I'm too nice ;)

All I wanted to do was pose a question and perhaps get one or two people thinking about themselves. No more or no less.

Thanks for the welcome Icingsugar :)

I appreciate what you are saying about the board and overall I would agree.

I'm not implying the board is bad. The reason I posted this thread initially was because I cared. It maybe soppy but it's true. If I thought the Lit boards had no value I would have moved on and forgotten about it.

Well, since I am new myself, I can't really answer this question.

I just kind of jumped in (didn't really even introduce myself, <gasp>) and figured if people talked to me, then fine and if not, so be it.

Now, I need to get back to my NaNo story before I get further behind than I already am.

Yes.

We have elite elements who believe they are better writers/thinkers/people than everyone else. (I'm one of those as anyone will tell you)

We have cliques. Some people only post on certain other peoples threads.

We have friends who will defend each other, generally as long as they believe the same thing, otherwise they will stay out of the way. ('til the name calling starts)

We have enemies and ignore lists.

We have debating people, we have arguementative people, we have nit pickers. ( who will piss and moan about the way I spell arguement amongst other things if the arguement isn't going their way)

We have debate and arguement and name calling and vitriol and piss taking but--

We also have support and help and calming influences and humour.

Introducing yourself on the AH with a defensive stance (and it was defensive, admit it) a few short months ago would have brought a completely different response to the virtual kindness you have received so far.

The number of 'irregulars' (on this board anyway) fluctuates enormously. People come and go. People get pissed off and leave. People make friends and stay. Some people have lives other than Lit.

Welcome to the zoo.

Gauche

Edited to ask: Surely your missis (Tatelou) has told you all this already?

Hi gauchecritic,

Thanks for the honest reply, it's much appreciated (sorry to shorten the quote but I left the parts in I wanted to respond to).

Where I did introduce myself was in the ORIGINAL Nano thread. (It's easy to see from searching for my posts) and it went as follows:

Hi all :)
Hi Everyone

I hope no one will mind me christening myself in this thread. I have been visiting the boards on and off and have now decided to become a member. I'm also taking part in NaNoWriMo 2003! I should also mention I'm Tatelou's husband so I've heard a lot about the board through her

For NaNoWriMo, I've yet to decide what plot and genre I'm going to write about. Normally I have written thriller/horror and touched on erotica (I will be posting a story this week once Tatelou has cast her eyes over it )

NaNoWriMo name: Light
Lit name: DarkLight
Novel working title: (untitled)
Genre: mmmm

My main worry doing NaNoWriMo is time, but whatever happens I'm going to write throughout the month and I expect some good days and some bad ones. Hopefully they will even out and I will hit the 50K mark... I just pray when I read the whole thing through it makes some sense!

I would love to know what was defensive about this post!?

PS. Thanks for the welcome :)

Dear DL,
Since we do not all participate in the Nano thing, the above was the first many of us had ever heard of you. The post was defensive and confrontational. Poor way to start.

MG,

I appreciate the fact this is the first time many of you have heard of me but that wasn't the question of the poll. I have noticed a habit by some to ignore posts by 'noobs' if you want a word to describe people with low post counts.

What I'm stating is not spiteful.. it's the truth. All you have to do is read the threads. Having said that I'm not saying the majority are like that, just a few of the 'big' players.

Also, if you state my post was confrontational, back it up. It's no good just saying this, please explain why. I am a willing student who will learn from his mistakes ;)

PS. What have pigs got to do with it (and what's wrong with them)?
