I want to know if the next idea I'm currently working on is allowed, as I couldn't find it anywhere in the rules:

I'm basing a multi-chapter Novella on the pc-game The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. I'm using the main storyline and characters involved, races, places, etc. but I came up with the name for my main character and most of the dialogue.
I've already posted the first chapter but will have to repost it because it's too short (less than 7500 words), and I wanted to know if it's okay to use or modify a story from a game like I did.

Another thing: I've translated a lot of words in Dutch, because that's the language I'm writing all my stories in.

As long as the story itself is yours and not the game's, it's fine. However, if you are posting it somewhere besides the Celebrity category where most of the fanfiction type stuff is kept, you should probably add a disclaimer similar to the ones used for the celebrity category (which you can find by clicking on any story in that category.)

I have, my disclaimer says something like:

"This story, split into different parts, is a translation (because it's in Dutch) and modification of the main story of the pc-game The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Most of the names, races, objects and events are taken from the game. The sexual actions, name of the main character and some dialogues are made up by the author."

Because I want to post in as many categories as possible for the Survivor Contest, I'm posting it in Novellas.

You do realize the story itself has to be written by you for it to count for Survivor. You can't just add stuff to an already existing story. It has to be original. You can use the characters and places but all the events in your story must be of your own making. You can't just copy what already exists.

We'll see

Let's just find out what the moderators of the Survivors Contest think about it. I just want to write the story and post it here, let them sort out where the story belongs and if it's allowed or not.

Sure. I've directed Lauren (survivor mod) to the thread.

I'm simply pointing out the rules of Survivor that your story itself must be original. No need to get snarky.

You don't realize, of course, that Crim (under a different name) scored very high in last year's Survivor Contest.

Who better to answer your questions?

But good luck with the moderators.

If your story is based (and apparently, in this case, very heavily) in a work of fiction that isn't yours, it can only go into the Celebrities' category, along with all the rest of the fanfic.

Writing something and calling it "Mind Control" doesn't make it "Mind Control". The story has to actually belong to the category.

The goal of Survivor is to write new and original stories in as many categories as possible, not simply getting stuff posted in those categories. The stories need to belong. Otherwise, what's the point?

Indeed I didn't know that.
Lauren Hynde has replied, so I have some work to do.

I always thought the minimum entry length for any Lit submission was 750, not 7,500.

Submission guidelines

"4. We do not currently accept submissions under 750 words."

Good luck.

It's a Survivor rule. 7500 words is the minimum for a Novels and Novellas story to be eligible for points. ;)

A good one too. Those of us who write longer works benefit the points in this category now.
