Texas Mother Hangs Herself, 3 Children

:(

"Texas has seen a number of child killings by mothers in recent years.

Less than five years earlier, another Hudson Oaks family was torn apart when Dee Etta Perez, 39, shot her three children, ages 4, 9 and 10, before killing herself.

Andrea Yates drowned her five children in the family's Houston bathtub in 2001. In 2003, Deanna Laney beat her two young sons to death with stones in East Texas, and Lisa Ann Diaz drowned her daughters in a Plano bathtub. Dena Schlosser fatally severed her 10-month-old daughter's arms with a kitchen knife in 2004.

All four of those women were found innocent by reason of insanity. Yates initially was convicted of capital murder, but that verdict was overturned on appeal."

Two seperate issues here; one is that this is a tragic terrible thing :(

The other is that this is a false pattern-- Some mothers have killed their children in Texas, but not all of them, or even many -- and mothers in other states have killed their children during that same period.

Horrible.

Truly horrifying. When I think about it, I have this visceral response. Awful.

and yes, I'm sure you're right, the TX thing is probably a media exaggeration...

I just made this exact same comment to a friend of mine earlier this evening. But you're right; surely there have been just as many cases in other states.

You can take a little bit of comfort in remembering that it's still a rare occurrence, and that's why it's so newsworthy... It doesn't happen so often that we get blasè about it.

There's that Susan Smith in SC in 1994, that pushed her car with her kids in it into a lake.
And I'm sure there are lots more examples of men taking their kids out in murder-suicides, in addition to the women.

Still, sometimes suicides kind of happen in bizarre clusters.

Their echoes reverberate. :(

Susan Smith was something entirely different, IMO... :x The way she made up the stories afterward... *shudder*

The 8 month old baby, in this case, lived... she was found hanging in the closet with the rest of them, but she was still alive... my guess is her weight wasn't great enough... :x

I had a very visceral response to the Susan Smith murders. There I was, a new mother with a severely disabled & medically fragile child ... fighting for his life ... and this fucking bitch in South Carolina drowns her two, beautiful, healthy boys. I could've killed her.

Susan Smith wanted to get rid of her kids so she could be with some guy. This lady in Texas was suffering from postpartum depression. Also, they apparently lived in a trailer. I can't even imagine that with four kids. That's enough to drive anyone nuts.

I’m sure there is a lot of sh*t in the water in Texas…. But, it’s what’s in the gene pool that effected those women. Makes me hurt to think about it.

Yeah... that one... really, if I could have gotten my hands on her...

let's just say, I'd be in prison right now. :x

That would be the Human gene pool...

Sad to say, but that list didn't include one of the more celebrated cases: Darlie Routier, from the Dallas area, who in 1997 was convicted of stabbing to death her two sons. She's now on death row. DARLIE ROUTIER - Wikipedia article

But on a lighter note, before dismissing the notion that there's something special about some Texas women, at least some of the time, recall the Lone Star state produced Bonnie Parker and the mother convicted of trying to have her daughter's main rival for cheerleader eliminated.

Oh, yes, and then there was the Service Academy murder pair. Can't recall any names, but they'd dated off and on for some time and both were going to service academies after high school. Following a break-up, she insisted he kill a girl he'd dated during that time and, I think, helped out.

Rumple Foreskin

Ugh...they just did a show that included a segment on that incident. It was utterly horrible. Kiten and I were riding in the car when this new one was reported. We just looked at each other in shock and shuddered. Something that will make any parent ill.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with the water in Texas . . . :p

I've seen a lot of news coverage concerning these events over the past couple of years. Makes Texas out to be a bad place to be, it seems. Not that I have much to argue against that point. San Antonio is on record as being the most dangerous city, per capita, with the highest proportion of overweight people, and the worst drivers, in the country.

Trust me, I've seen a lot to back up all three accounts.

For over two weeks now, one of my employees from the restaurant has been missing. He went out drinking on Mother's Day and bought cocaine from someone, to whom he apparently owed money. He decided to walk home that night, leaving his wallet, keys and cell-phone at the bar.

We haven't heard from him since. Odds are, he's dead. I hate to think of it that way, but his mother and girlfriend hasn't heard from him, neither have any of his friends. It's just a matter of time before remains are found.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that violent crimes in Texas have received quite a bit of the spotlight in recent years. Is it because Dubbyah is from Texas? Who knows. Maybe more crime happens here than anywhere else, maybe not. Personally, I think that the US is just getting more and more dangerous as a whole.

Makes me want to move back to Europe . . . .
