Nobody has raised this so I thought I would. What did you lot think about the CBS report that England is a more violent country than America. It caused quite a bit of fuss over here, the UK crime figures are worked out differently to the US, the UK's far lower murder rate was glossed over too.

I hadn't heard that report -- but it seems very much like asking which is the better fruit, apples or oranges? They're so different in so many different ways that a comparison of any sort would seem so subjective that it hardly seems worth asking.

I'm sure there weren't more people murdered in England, say, last year. But is the report using some sort of population ratio?

Anyway, it's a surprising conclusion to be sure. Is England now on the list of countries Americans should avoid, like Lybia?

Was the report talking about group violence, like soccer hooliganism?

the report was brought on by ccn, when tthey were reporting
on the violence in brussels by english supporters, and telling the american tourists that visit england in there
thousands each year, that it was not safe to visit england , so the english papers have just hit back with figures from american crime reports, stating that one american city which i think was new york had more murders.
robberies, muggings, violent attacks than the the whole of
england together, thats all which forme is just a bit of
journalist tit for tat thats all, for there is good and bad
every where in this world.just make the most of it, as it is not a rehearsal you only get one go at it.

Two cats and a raccoon got in a fight outside my window last night, I'm seriously thinking about moving if the government can't bring that kind of violence under control...

Seriously, though, DCL is right. It is all apples and oranges. If you've got enough time on your hands you can make statistics mean anything you damn well want them to be. If you're worried about the amount of violence in New York City, don't go there. The rate of violent crime varies so much from city to city, and even from neighborhood to neighborhood within a given city, there's not really any way to look at numbers like that and make any sense of them.

The most violent thing that happens in my neighborhood is what the garbagemen do to the garbage cans every Monday morning, but in less than 5 minutes I can drive to a neighborhood where you can find drug dealers and crack whores on every other corner. But as long as they stay on their hill and I stay on mine, I don't really consider it a problem.

Oh, and as far as soccer hooliganism goes.. Maybe if they'd shit can those silly ass soccer games (I mean really, you're big Euro championship ends in a scoreless tie and is decided by penalty kicks??? If that doesn't frustrate you enough to riot I don't know what will) and go straight to the violence, maybe they could get a decent TV audience in this country....

Care to elaborate??

It was the word hooliganism, wasn't it, Roger?

Haha - Lasher said "hooliganism".

Nah, I was just communicating my general amusement at your vitriolic outburst.

I don't like soccer and I know nothing about American sports so your words can not harm me Guru Lash.

:)

Oh, well....

Apparently the Hooligans can't type, or maybe they can't read. Or maybe there just all out kicking the shit out of... well, whomever they kick the shit out of.

Thank God you were just expressing general amusement, Roger. I was afraid I was gonna be lured into a heated discussion in which the word header appeared repeatedly - and not in a good way....

A few days ago, I was actually going to start a thread about the soccer hooligans & their nastiness in Brussels, but I didn't see Golden on the board at the time and it just wasn't any fun unless I could razz him a bit. Since Flagg's here, and he's just as much fun to razz, I guess I can start now...

What the heck is with you British soccer fans? No wonder guns are illegal - there'd be ten Brits left alive, with your tempers!

:)

It's not just the Brits

What's with soccer fans period. At times, it seems the Brits are the cool-headed ones. At least they take it out on the other fans. Bolivians have been known to shoot players.

Why do we always get the blame for all trouble abroad yes there is a minority that do go looking for fights and instigate trouble,
The belgium and dutch cleared there jails to lock up these thugs which is right then the british goverment can then do something about it. But of the 800 and odd arrested only 30or so where charged with actual crimes. So 700 and odd people where deported but what for been english and in a the wrong place .
We have always had a reputation even the murder of two innocent leeds fans in turkey was our fault.

p.s peace love and hapiness to everyone

If your team was that bad ...

Q. What's the same about a three pin plug and the England team?

A. They're both useless in Europe

I prefer rugby league anyway. But the other European fans were just as bad, but only the English were threatened with disqualification if more violence took place. Mind you, it was very quiet afterwards, perhaps it should be applied throughout.

I think the trouble died down not because of the thret of been thrown out , just the simple fact that they had to go back to work on the monday morning. If you look into it there was hardly any trouble before friday night, people will have got the idea we will spend the weekend in amsterdam get a cheap ferry, plane, train ticket find some where cheap to stay get drunk and fight and with the game been against germany the british bulldog never surrender attitude towards the germans would just have encourge anyone to go out if they liked football or not to fight for queen and country that how some people think. Then after that sunday was quiet as they all returned home.

But the problem is worse in other country , italy for example they ahve pitched battles in the stadiums, people getting stab the problem is they don,t get away with it in this country the police are tough on football related violence, so we are now exporting the thugs.

p.s peace,love and valantino rossi

Just sending Mike Tyson to the Isles has shifted the pendulum so CBS' report was quite timely. As long as we don't take him back, the US is 1 up.

When it comes to sports fans, we Americans have nothing to be proud of with the post-championship riots in major cities these days. How in the hell did this tradition get started?
