Is the "Halloween party, screwing a stranger in costume" theme too cliche?

Been working on the next few chapters of my own stories and was thinking about Halloween...and wondering what people thought about the "Halloween party" theme.

Has it been played to death? Can anybody offer a twist?

The usual theme is the female/male screwing somebody they think they know and ends up being somebody else. Whether it's a costume that was traded or just mistaken or whatever, trying to think of a new twist to the old theme since it almost seems cliche to have it happen in a story these days it's been done so much...

Been trying for weeks and have nothing, so wondered if the collective juices of the masses can offer something with a twist!

Any ideas?

Everything is a cliche, when you come right down to it. The point isn't to avoid tried and true plots, but to do them so well that they seem fresh.

That being said, how about these for some semi-new twists:

  • Your masked paramour turns out to be someone you hate, and they hate you. But the sex was fabulous; now you both have to live with the mixed emotions of hating yet craving each other.
  • The masked paramour turns out to be your mother/sister/daughter or some other inadvertent incest. Okay, that's probably already a cliche.
  • You think you know who it is, but you are wrong. They also think they know who you are, but they are also wrong. You both go home happy but deluded. Not sure where it goes from there.....
  • A thinks he's fucking B. C thinks he's fucking D. But actually it was A and D, and C and B. Do they find out? Not until all sorts of problems occur.
  • Same as above, but both unions produce offspring, who of course grow up with the wrong fathers.
  • A straight person accidentally has gay sex. Or a gay person accidentally has hetero sex. Now they have to learn to deal with this new side of themself.

So true, hehehe, didn't really think about it in that perspective.

Great ideas...not into the incest theme so wouldn't go with the second one, but the others definitely are possibilities.

One of the avenues I was thinking was similar to your first suggestion, the "masked paramour" turning out to be somebody she hates and they somehow coerce/blackmail her since she obviously didn't sleep with her other half. Of course, then the whole blackmail thing is cliche too, LOL...so you're right there, everything is, it's just how you spin it!

Definitely interested to hear any more twists people may have! And much appreciated!

Another twist?

The twist could be that your main character (probably female) is the masked paramour and since her identity is hidden, gives herself permission to be promiscuous...engaging in a one night stand and not having anyone know it was her.
Just a thought... :p

Yes, my main character is female.

Your suggestion is the usual angle many people write about and what I was originally thinking. As I was writing along those lines I was looking at other "costume" type stories and found this to be a central theme in the majority of them.

That was the main point of my post wondering if people thought that type of theme was overdone. As Carnevil stated EVERYTHING has been overdone here, it's the nature of the various twists and such that keeps people reading.

I just don't want to write a story and have the reader skim through it and think "this is the same old same old," and move on...

Thanks again! It definitely is the angle I was intending to draw upon.

I've seen a couple of stories on this theme and that is exactly what I thought. Been there done that. One twist I don't think I have seen is that the stranger the wife ends up with is actually her husband. Unfortunately, those would have to be very good costumes in order for them not to recognize each other.

One I have been working on, but put on the back burner is a story where a woman dresses like a stereotypical prostitute, ends up at the wrong place or party. Plays along at first but soon finds herself over her head...

How odd, was thinking of this twist just this morning, LOL. My twist on it I started jotting down was a costume party with a prize such as a trip given away at the evening. After everybody arrived they would announce this year not only would the actual costume be graded but also the person acting the party they were dressed. There would obviously be rules--you wouldn't want somebody dressed as Jason from Halloween movies cutting people up with chainsaws, hehehe--but they could "act" the part and carry a chainsaw around and such.

In my version the woman goes to the party dressed as a prostitute. Over the course of the night as she is hit on continuously she finally gives in and starts "charging for services" and ends up winning the prize.

Maybe have the twist being her husband couldn't make the party and the prize being a little getaway they always wanted.

Hmmm, now you have me thinking! Thanks!

Rent Die Fledermaus, and retell it with Batman & Wonderwoman as the main characters?

Or maybe go meta: It's a spouse-swapping halloween party, where people are deliberately acting out the classic masquerade-sex fantasy, although the main character winds up having sex with his/her spouse anyway, sorta like The Pina Colada Song ("Escape").

Or go supernatural: characters are having a halloween party in a backyard next to a wildwood. A couple go for a walk in the wood, get separated, and the main character in a goblin mask bumps into some real goblins, who cannot tell that s/he is just wearing a mask, and invite him/her in their mischief with the main character's love interest, now lost in the woods...

LOL, LOVE that one...haven't done any sci-fi twists like that before, would be fun to give it a try!

Thanks!

Has anybody seen/heard of the Buffy Halloween episode? I found the idea behind it so cool:

because it's Halloween, everyone dresses up (logically). However, due to some curse or spell, everyone becomes his or her outfit, turning Buffy into a damsel in distress, for instance.

This could be applied to either a fanfic exploring the idea in an erotic way or applying this to another setting, turning the woman who dressed as a prostitute into a real hooker, for instance.

What the above said and some more

I don’t think this genre is overdone. Conversely, I think it disappointing of how few stories are of this ilk. I love the suggestions thus proffered with rare exception (as I’m not into science fiction). The story ideas that I’m most in the mood for is for a wife, with prior approval and encouragement from her husband, attends an adult sex costumed party that is a bit out of town (with or with out her husband) to sew her oats and to bring him home proof of infidelity and juicy details.

a. She unwittingly bangs a slime ball she loathes.
b. Little does she know, that her husband had purposefully tipped off an admirer she thinks is a slime ball, which attends and is one who bangs her and records her indiscretions. Husband later admits he tipped him off to keep her from falling for her lover.
c. She recognizes some other attendees (that she would be mortified if they recognized her) and manages to keep her distance and identity secret while getting off with others.

I agree with Docgbrown in that there are only a small (relatively speaking) number of these types of stories in general, but as I went through them they were all very similar...which was the original intent of my post wondering if the plot had been too overdone. From everybody's comments there does seem to be interest in this...too bad it's too late for this year's Halloween contest, hehehe. Sadly I know my writing skills are not on par with some of the entries in that category so going to apologize in advance for my meager writing skills if the story ends up sucking, LOL.

I like the idea of people somehow magically becoming what they dressed up as, particularly the goblin one suggested by Oblimo. Also the other suggestions are very promising.

Also love the ideas by Docgbrown and a few others on the wife ending up with somebody she does not like or such...so probably going to put that in my bag of ideas for the future.

I've only submitted a few stories thus far all within the same "big" story so they've all been "chapters" submitted with the same character. I also have a rather large story I've been working on over the year that I may post eventually...but again that's been a long story I've been working on with many chapters.

Been looking at doing something that was a single submission and many of these ideas look very promising so hopefully going to get something out in the next week or so on at least one of them!

Appreciate all the great ideas and if anybody has others, please post! Came here looking for one idea to a story and so far have ended up with at least three, LOL! Hope I can do them justice...

Well I would have some guy trying to remove his clown mask and outfit to bang some hot chick and he couldn't get the costume off. Desperate to do so he would make wild gestures, which would crack everyone up. Eventually he would hurtle himself off the window (applause). The girl it turns out had a dad that forbid her from partying - naturally the dad himself was a clown as well.

The point is to write under any theme and find the style that suits you best.

Anyways my latest is up...
