Sharon Resumes Direct Talks With Palestinians
By JAMES BENNET

"JERUSALEM, Feb. 8 — With his re-election campaign behind him and the task of forming a new governing coalition still incomplete, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has resumed direct contacts with senior Palestinian officials, Israeli and Palestinian aides said today.

Mr. Sharon continues to refuse any direct contact with Yasir Arafat, the Palestinian leader, but he met this week with the speaker of the Palestinian legislature, Ahmed Qureia, who is known as Abu Ala.

Israeli officials described the contacts, which include lower-level meetings, as an effort to arrange a cease-fire. The formula presented in the talks appeared to be the same as one that has been tried without success in the past."

It looks good in the world's headlines but can anyone trust a man who constantly says one thing and then does another.

On the other hand now that he hasn't got a strong coalition maybe he's being forced to abandon his "kill more of them than they kill of us" policy.

On the other, other hand maybe he knows this attempt will fail and when it does he can start pointing the accusing finger again...

I think it would be brilliant policy for him to just ignore the suicide bombing attacks — as long as those coordinating the attacks don't use defenseless animals to help carry out the deeds.

Hey! It's Sunday...

Let's hear it from miles...

I think we should sit down and negotiate with Mr. Charles Manson since I'm sure he can be trusted to be dealt with since it's been a long time since we've have had any sort of smoking gun relating him to any new murders by directive. His family would be willing to live side by side with us, in Peace, if we'd just give them thier ranch and freedom back...

Well here's an update...

From today's Guardian (also appearing in the Times)..

Israel in surprise peace talks

Sharon's secret meeting with Arafat negotiator paves way for new ceasefire discussions today

The Guardian

"Israel and the Palestinians begin ceasefire talks today following a previously undisclosed meeting last week between Ariel Sharon and a close associate of Yasser Arafat, the highest level contact between the two sides in a year.
Israeli officials have described the meetings as the start of a process that will lead to a lasting settlement with the Palestinians.
But Mr Sharon's political opponents questioned whether the talks are a sincere attempt to revive the peace process or a ploy to pressure the dovish Labour party into his government, and to meet US demands for the Israeli prime minister to commit himself to dialogue."

Why do I feel the Beast is playing his usual cat and mouse game?

The man and the Zionists have never wanted peace. They just want all Arabs out of Palestine. They don't care where they go or whether they live or die, they just want them out...

So why this sudden 'let's talk peace' shit?
