Is Saddam in Syria?

DEBKAfile’s Exclusive Middle East sources have tracked down the top Iraqi leadership’s bolt-hole.

It is a large 1,600-room luxury resort with 600 meters of private sandy beach in the Mediterranean coastal town of Latakiya called Cote d’Azur De Cham Resort, prepared and chartered in toto by Baghdad.

The group may include Saddam Hussein or his sons, but this is not confirmed.

The hotel is located close to the Assad family villa.

Top Iraqi officials are reported hiding there since March 23, four days after the US-led coalition invaded Iraq.

They are guarded by a Syrian commando unit armed with anti-air missiles while Syrian naval missile boats secure the port.

DEBKAfile’s military sources also report: The Iraqi troops sent to reinforce Baghdad’s international airport are members of the Iraqi 26th Brigade’s special commando unit, whose sole task is to defend lives of Saddam Hussein and close family.

These commandos take orders from no one but Iraqi ruler and sons, who are unlikely to have stripped themselves of this protection if they were still present in the capital. This outward movement from Baghdad is further indication of drastic changes in the Iraqi government’s top level

I would guess no,traditionaly Syria has been a major rival of Iraq and Sadaam,Iran doesn't seem likely either for same reasons and a few others,IF he has turned tail and ran....I would guess Russia or Jordan...those two have had at least cordial realtions.

Either way I want to see him caught and stuck in a cell for what is left of his natural life.

Not marytrdom for him....let him take his own life in a cell..The lowest level of N'air{Hell} will be there for him.

He's not in Syria......maybe Hades..

Now his WMD's, probably.
Does anyone remember during Gulf War 1, when squadrons of Iraqi air Force jets fled to Iran?
Enemies can be good allies if the cause is against the Jews or the West.

Just like Osama bin Laden and Arafat....these guys are unkillable, despite very attempt.

Yeah, did they ever get those MiGs back?

Or are they still in Iran?

I think the Northern Fly Zone...

Covered the airfields out of Iran, hence, they may be mothballed involuntarily.
I haven't found anything that indicates they got them back.
I sure didn't see any swarms of them coming up to meet our fighters.

They did get them back, and according to some sources most of the Iraqi airforce is hidden in Iran again.

For old enemies, they seem to have nice arrangement with Iran minding the Iraqi airplanes everytime the big bad guy comes knocking.

Really? When did they get them back?

I'm surprised Iran let them go, and it didn't seem like Iraq expected them to.

(Nothing like the sudden appearance of Satan to put a stop to family squabbles.)

It is my understanding those Iraqi jets that flew to Iran during Gulf War I...are still in Iran. Might be wrong, that is what I read somewhere.

I can't find a story where Iran returned those planes to Iraq...does anyone have a link. I found one page on a newspaper printed by Hussein's son that said Iran was going to return them, but nothing confirming it.

In addition I found this unconfirmed report.

DUBAI, Oct 8 (AFP) - Iran is preparing to supply the
anti-Taliban forces of ousted Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani
with nearly 20 MiG-21 fighter planes belonging to Iraq, the Arabic
newspaper Al-Hayat said Wednesday.
The London-based daily said the MiG-21s were among the planes
which Iraq flew to safety in Iran at the start of the 1991 Gulf War
over Kuwait.
"Tehran has painted the planes in the Afghan colours," Al-Hayat
said, adding that Afghan forces had been using MiG-21s since their
battle against the Soviet occupation in the 1980s.
Iraq says it flew 115 fighter planes and 33 other aircraft to
Iran in January 1991 to protect them from US-led allied raids. But
Tehran insists it has 22 Iraqi aircraft which could be returned to
Baghdad at the UN's request.
Tehran is opposed to the Islamic Taliban militia which has held
Kabul for a year and controls around two-thirds of Afghanistan.

Still wondering....?

Funny how a little gas between friends can maintain such a great relationship.

You would think in 12 years they might have cracked open the manuals and learned how to fly em... they are just too funny those iraqi.

I think he would have a much better chance of gaining power back if he goes to france or Russia.

LN after saddam wins tonight those dammm kurds are going to be sorry... again... don't they ever learn!!

CNN Snip from Dec 2002

The Iraqi air force has 300 combat fighters, compared to 750 before the war. Some 109 additional fighters remain in Iran, where they were flown during the war. The 60 fighters in the force -- F-1 Mirages, MiG 25s and MiG 29s -- are considered fairly capable. Just 60 percent to 80 percent of the force is considered "flyable," but less than that is considered "fully missionable capable." Pilots each get 20 to 50 hours training annually, about the same a U.S. pilot gets each month. There is evidence that Iraqi air force pilots are reluctant to engage coalition aircraft. Many pilots come from the Dulaym tribe, which has long had elements hostile to the regime.

Who knows...but looks like Iraqi aircraft in Iran still, maybe permanently now...?

It would appear so. It seems their squabbling continues after all:
TEHRAN, Iran, Sept. 2, 2002 (UPI) -- Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi on Monday accused the Iraqi government of offering the biggest service to Israel by invading Kuwait in 1990 and starting a war with Iran in 1980. Asefi said Israel benefited most from both wars while the Iraqi government only provoked discord and disputes among the Arab and Islamic countries by invading Kuwait.

His remarks were in response to Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan, who strongly lashed at Iran over the weekend, charging that the "Persians have always been the allies of Zionists" and "of having ambitions in the Arab world like the Zionists." Ramadan said Iran refuses to return Iraqi civil planes flown to Iran for shelter during the 1991 Gulf War and reminded that Tehran encouraged the Shiites in southern Iraq for rebellion shortly afterward.
