I realize that when we sift through humanity's civilized layers, theological layers and educated layers and get right down to primal functions, the only purpose for a male of the species is to 'spread the seed' and the only purpose for the female is to 'improve the species'. It is very difficult for a human male to remain with one sexual partner? Is it easier for a female to be more selective with her sexual partners therefor not having as many or wanting as many? Just a question and some thoughts for pondering.
 
as an anthropologist/archaeologist I can....

....tell you that it is cultural. No ifs, ands or but(t)s about it.

I'd agree that it's definately a cultural issue. But I also tend to think that like most things dealing with mankind it's just complicated enough that there are probably more factors involved than just that one.
