The D's biggest problem in the last election is that they assumed they could insult 62% of the population to the core just because they felt like it then expected them to vote D anyway. They piled this on top of more insults about deplorables and all the rest of the economic and social BS they were pushing.

I recall a documentary about the vicious 1960 Democratic primary (where JFK was actually running against LBJ for president...LBJ of course eventually became JFK's VP).

The doc showed the "typical" West Virginia Democratic voter (Think: "Hee Haw" watcher) and pappy was spluttering about never voting for a "papist" who "takes his orders from the Vatican".
