Is Love a form of madness?

That a woman, so obviously intelligent (and a married mother of 3) could do that beggars the question...what happens when we fall in love?
There's no contradiction between intelligence and madness.

She's an astronaut. That in itself tells ut that she's ambitious, competitive, focused and driven. Channel that into something other than strapping onto a big tank of explosive fuel and hauling yourself into vacuum, and the oddest things can happen.

You just gotta wonder what she thought would be the ultimate outcome of this little venture.

*sigh*

Having been insane once, I can tell you not much thinking goes on.

Ideas come into your head and they seem perfectly reasonable.

Even killing yourself seems like a good thing to do.

It's kind of sad to look at her pictures and see how much she's changed physically, you have to wonder what was going on mentally.

Reading more in today's newspaper, colleagues are asking whether she suffered psychological problems adjusting back to life on Earth.

And the wearing of nappies is common practice during launches and landings - never knew that.

Whatever the reason, I can't help but feel for her.

I had to think about this. Nappy = Diaper?

I think anyone can go unbalanced for a while. Love or not.

Yes, sorry nappy = diaper.

I still think that love can make you do things you'd never normally do. I know I have in the past.

I have to say, on seeing the photo of the man she believed she was fighting for, my first two thought were 1) "Hubba Hubba!", and 2) "I can imagine doing all that for *him*."

I wouldn't *do* anything like that, because I am not insane (well, not especially so); but I could see the lady's point.

- quince, who is not especially insane :)

Yes, he is a looker, but then that's another thing about love...you see the other person through different eyes...

That's a form of madness I'm also familiar with.

My ex for example. I knew she was an alcoholic almost from the git go. I chose to ignore it. Convinced myself 'Love will help her get by it.'

Insane, as well as really fucking stupid.

No, I don't think stupid - you loved her and we all hope that love will conquer everything.

Calvin: What's it like to fall in love?
Hobbes: Well... Say the object of your affection walks by...
Calvin: Yeah?
Hobbes: First, your heart falls into your stomach and splashes your
innards. All the moisture makes you sweat profusely. This
condensation shorts the circuits to your brain, and you get all
woozy. When your brain burns out altogether, your mouth
disengages and you babble like a cretin until she leaves.
Calvin: That's love?!?
Hobbes: Medically speaking.
Calvin: Heck, that happened to me once, but I figured it was cooties!

The co-pilots seat on the next shuttle flight and the first female orgasm in space?

Love is just nature's way of fooling people into reproducing. It doesn't matter how intelligent or stupid, sane or insane - we are all easily fooled.

I definitely agree - it affects us all.

Love certainly has made me do some rather nutty things. Nothing like this...but,oh, in my imagination....I've done much worse.

In all seriousness, I wonder if a latent mental illness might be triggered by living in a zero-gravity environment for several days with a group of people who've become closer to you than family, one of which you recognize as your soul mate, but who refuses to acknowlege the almost painful sexual attraction that's made all the more powerful because of the unique spiritual bond; a bond that could make the two of you incredibly happy together if only he understood how much more he means to you than he ever could to that interfering bimbo in Orlando.

That would explain everything except the BB Gun. For that, they should plan a controlled study on a future Shuttle mission, using hamsters.

First thing this made me think of (w/o the zero-gravity) was jury duty. It was only two days, and we weren't sequestered, but one guy who could not get over being chosen chairman, nearly caused the other 11 to commit murder in the courthouse.

Read an article earlier today that recalled the Skylab mission in the 70s. Stress levels got to the point where the crew (in space!) went on strike, didn't do their work, refused to speak to mission control.

The diaper-woman story seems aberrant, but I suspect a long list of 'odd' astronauts is on file somewhere.

Damn you! You're the interfering bimbo in Orlando! If you hadn't tried to come between us, this would never have happened.

Falling in love is always a form of madness - whether it turns out a good or bad madness who knows?

I see a great chain story here. Title - Flirting With Madness

Boy meets girl... boy falls in lust, girl falls in love... BB guns are fired in the dark, she's saved by her nappy... unwanted pregnacy... loving wife, Non-Consent... I think we can cover all the catagories...

It is an interesting idea - I wonder if the presence of all those chemicals created by that funky feeling when you start falling... masks some other much needed chemicals... <<<< gets out the lithium and chugs a few.

:p
