Is it possible to recover deleted data from a sim/sd card?

Is it possible to recover deleted data from a sd card/harddrive?

I've seen references to this but now that the need has presented itself, I wonder if it's true.

I've found dozens of references on Google to software, some free, some fee based.
Looks like some require recovery stick or some kind of hardware, I've found a local source for this. So tell me, does anyone have a positive, successful experience they can share?

Great info however... I've found a reasonable local source to do for me for little money!. Great info though for the hard drive, I'll see what I can recover there, thanks so much!
