Is it just me? Where have all the signatures gone?

I’ve posted this in Tech but if there’s no answer there, hopefully from Manu, maybe someone on here can help.

I use an iPhone and I thought the problem might lie there but it’s still there, or not in this case, when I use my laptop.

I can’t see the signatures on everyone’s posts. Which is annoying. Not so much in the case of regular contributors but for those who don’t and the newbies.

Often, when someone makes an interesting comment, I click on the link in their signature and have a look at their profile and stories. But I can’t do that now because I can’t see their signatures. I can’t even see my own.

I’ve tried anything I can think of, but I admit I’m not as expert with technology as others on here, but I haven’t been able to solve my problem.

I’ve seen the answers to Kumquatqueen’s question but none of them work. Perhaps it’s just that I can’t understand the answers. Perhaps someone might answer in terms for a five year old.

Am I the only one this is happening to?

I still can't see anyone's signature (Android phone) despite having checked the tickybox by "Show signatures with messages?" is still ticked.

I've gone into my signature which appears to still exist - can anyone else see my signature? It should say 'My Stories' with a link to them.

You’re just the same as me. I can’t see my signature and neither can I see yours.

It doesn’t matter whether I use Modern or Classic.

I can see all of your signatures, but I'm on a PC. Sorry I can't offer anything more useful. 😔

I've seen a few threads on this. As best I can tell, the new forum always hides signatures on mobile devices (and maybe also tablets?) even if the checkbox is enabled.

FWIW, I can see all of your signatures right now, but I'm posting this from desktop. On mobile I don't see any signatures at all.

Best as I can tell, it's screen size dependent. Unless you're browsing on a phone with quite the screen, you're not going to see signatures on mobile. Desktop and most tablets should still show the signatures, at least from the testing I've done.

Yeah, I'm entirely desktop here. Let me go see how it looks on our iPad...

...yep, it's the mobile device thing. Safari has a totally different look from the desktop page, with no sigs. I also have Firefox on the iPad, and I have it set to lie to the interwebs that it's supposed to get the desktop version. Sigs are there, on a desktop-formatted page.

Solution is to use another browser like Firefox, which allows you to force it to use desktop versions only. Don't know how that would look on a phone. I rarely browse on the phone; I hate "reading" much of anything on the small screen.

Guess it is device dependent. My Samsung tablet ( which I double checked to make sure wasn't set to force desktop mode ) shows the signatures and a slightly modified version of Desktop view, but when I booted up an Ipad that has a bigger screen than the Samsung, it was showing a view identical to my Samsung phone, and no signatures.

Wow, it won't even display signatures on your Profile if you're on a device that doesn't show them on the forum. So if someone is browsing on a mobile view device, your signature may as well not even exist.

That blows goats.

Right, I downloaded Firefox for Android, and it looked pretty much identical, no sigs. Then I switched to the Desktop version of the site, and suddenly all your sigs above have appeared, with RejectReality'a images and everything.

But the site doesn't fit on the screen unless the text is a quarter the size of the mobile site, so that is pretty useless.

I'm surprised so many people read on a computer still, though I suppose this forum has writers too who do mainly use computers rather than handheld devices for writing.

There's a new option in your profiles that lets you view peoples signatures, or not.

That's always been there. Pretty much all forum software has been offering that option for 20 years.

Which is why I seethe when people smugly giggle about responsive designs moving toward severely limiting or eliminating them. They've had the option to remove them from their own experience for two decades, but are only happy when the option is taken away from everyone.

This. Writing on a phone is for masochists.
Funny you should say that...
Yes, I do almost all my writing on my phone. I'm not a fan of this sitting up lark.

There is, but it turns out you need that selected *and* to be at a computer, not on a tablet or phone.

Weird. I'm on an ipad now using Safari and I can see all signatures. I haven't changed anything after the roll over.

Is there an option in Safari to request the desktop version of the site?

Ahhh... Just realized I wasn't logged in when I looked on that Ipad. When I logged in, signatures are visible. So the default for guests is no signatures. I think I've seen somewhere where most images are blocked for guests, so that tracks.

Back to most likely being related to screen size, then. I don't have anything between my phone and my Samsung ( 10 inch ) to test on.

If I mess around in developer tools in Chrome, I still see signatures on a device with 540 x 720, but any of the options with a lower width dimension display mobile view.

I only work on a desktop, so, I have nothing to add. I do read on my Samsung 10" tablet but use the Android app for that. I also use that for bedtime reading of my collection of eBooks.

I see everyone who as their sigs enabled.

I’ve worked out how to see signatures when using my laptop. It’s a miracle I’ve been able to do that but anyway it’s done and my ego is happy. I assumed because my signature was saved prior to the changes it would still be the same but apparently you have to go into signature and save it again.

For some unknown reason I got an error message which said my signature was two lines to long. No problem. I reduced the signature and it saved okay. My signature is only very short and I see others have very much information contained in their signature. Why that should be I don’t know but I’d love to know. So if anyone would like to share any information I’d be very grateful.

The same process doesn’t work when I tried to resave my signature on my iPhone. So it would seem that’s something which needs seeing to. Hopefully, because I only tend to use my laptop for submitting stories, it’s something Manu will attend to in the near future. Hopefully.

There used to be, but I can't find it anymore (last used Lit a long time before all this new shit happened). Where is the option now?

Thank you sticky girl. Is there an option to see more of your avatar? If not, just tell me how many eyes you have and I guess I'll just have to take your word for it

Turning your phone to landscape mode shows signatures. Holding it vertical in portrait mode hides them.
