Is it illegal to enter the USA without going through a border check point? Or can people legally enter the USA anywhere and any time they like? Perhaps if there is anyone out there that has devoted their life to a study of law we could get a legally correct answer to this mind boggling question.

You can legally enter the United States without going directly through a checkpoint/ border station. As one point of reference.

I am not say you can enter legally everywhere in the US without going though a border station. But there are some areas you can.

No, not by land, sea, or air. You MUST land/dock at a designated entry point. Same with foot or automotive traffic.

What about taking up residence in the USA? Can a person legally enter the USA whenever they want and wherever they want and avoid any legal check points? Can such a person just start living in the USA?

I am not a lawyer but as best I can tell that would be an illegal act. Am I wrong about that?

Also, I am curious about entering Mexico. Is it true that people born in the USA can go into Mexico any time and any place they want? Or do they have laws about such matters?
