Is it better to spam or email specific editors?

As an editor, are you more likely to respond to a private email or a general thread requesting help?

I realize that VE's are just that. Volunteers. They provide a valuable service and are underappreciated enough as it is.

On the advice of another poster, I am going through the VE list, page by page. I have chosen three editors to contact so far, based on their interesting profiles. I used the contact feature and also copied myself. I did get my copy, so I know the email system is working. I haven't gotten any responses yet.

I am interested in finding the right editor and keeping them for a long time. Since I plan on using the same characters for awhile, they would be able to help me with character developement.

If I have my druthers, I would very much like to find a female editor with real life BDSM and Fetish experience, especially if they have been involved in a long term relationship.

I realize I may be asking too much . . . but there seems to be a lot of editors on the VE list that fit this category.

Any advice you have on helping writers find the right longterm editor that suits them best will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I think the likelihood to respond varies VE to VE. Speaking for myself only, most of the writers that I work with contacted me directly through email. That being said, the whole point of this forum is to help match up writers and editors. I have responded to posts here in the editor's forum for editing help when the subject matter interests me.

I try to respond quickly to any emails I receive with either a confirmation that I am able/want to take on the request or too busy/not interested in subject matter. Response time varies as well; some people aren't able to respond to emails as quickly as one would like. ;) As you’ve noted, we do have many other commitments besides Lit. Patience on the side of the writer is ALWAYS appreciated by VEs. :)

Good luck! I hope that you hear back soon!

Spam them??? You mean, like, send them links to pay-for-porn sites, or suggest how they can enlarge their penises? If that's the other option, I'm pickin' e-mail.

Actually, I'd pick e-mail anyway. The more personal the contact, the more successful you're likely to be.

MarshAlien,

I was just wondering how successful the general requests in the forums were. I'm new here. I'd feel like a spammer just throwing it out to the virtual winds. I'd hate to get seven editors for one story and get none the next time.

I guess I feel kind of protective about my stories and hate the idea of turning them over to just anyone. I am trying the direct email approach with no luck so far. Some of the editors I have emailed haven't updated their profiles in a while . . . which may be my problem.

Just wondering what works best for most writers here on this site.

There have been several comments here to the effect that the VE list hasn't been pruned in so long that it's of limited value.

Spamming may be your best bet, although I understand your reluctance. An alternative would be to follow some of the threads in this forum and send an e-mail to someone you see here who's also on the VE list? Or ask anyway, even if the nic isn't on the list?

I know, but I can never resist a chance to be a smart-ass. Sorry. I would start with writers whose work you really like and ask them who edits their work, and then contact those editors. Sort of like networking.

I have had emails from the VE list, and I have responded to requests here. It makes little or no difference, except that if I respond to a posting here it probably means that I know a good deal about the story which needs editing, whereas on the VE list I am depending on the author to take note of my likes and dislikes as marked on there.

When I needed to find a new editor I simply made a thread in here. I got two IM's in a couple of days, still with one the other sorta vanished.

I suppose it helped I had stories posted already so my style was pretty evident. Though it's not to hard to simply state what you write and what you want your editor to do. Most of the VE's patrol this section I would beleive, at least those looking for another author. ;)
