The rate declined for just one racial group: black men. And it declined for only one age group: men and women over 75. The data analysis provided fresh evidence of suffering among white Americans. Recent research has highlighted the plight of less educated whites, showing surges in deaths from drug overdoses, suicides, liver disease and alcohol poisoning, particularly among those with a high school education or less. The new report did not break down suicide rates by education, but researchers who reviewed the analysis said the patterns in age and race were consistent with that recent research and painted a picture of desperation for many in American society.

“This is part of the larger emerging pattern of evidence of the links between poverty, hopelessness and health,” said Robert D. Putnam, a professor of public policy at Harvard and the author of “Our Kids,” an investigation of new class divisions in America.

If so, nah. The increasing suicide rates aren't surprising at all, the working class in the USA is shrinking, the middle ground between the poverty stricken and the poor and the high income earners and the million/billionaires, is shrinking. More and more people in the USA are falling into poverty and financial depression whilst millionaires become more and more nepotistic and only larger in number because their families are expanding. And this is all happening because of the millionaire+ classes have bought the political system and are having the Washington politicians bias the flow of all money toward them by enacting policies which make basic services, education and other such things harder for normal working Americans to financially acquire. E.g even though progressively less Americans can afford higher education for their kids, the ones that can are now paying such obscene quantities of money that it's much more profitable for the private education companies than if they were charging low rates with most Americans receiving higher education.
It's creating a society ever more strongly infested by financial stress and hardship and coupled with one of the most abysmal healthcare (mental and physical) systems in the world, more and more people don't see a way out of their constant onslaught of issues, which at their core are mostly down to corporate greed, so they end up killing themselves.

Not to say Obama doesn't have some of their blood on his hands, he's a puppet to international corporations and purposefully makes no attempt to help the working Americans out of their strife because that would cut into his bribes. Hillary Clinton is doing the exact same and she's actually genuinely farrrr worse in terms of contempt for the American public and how beholden to the donors she is.
Yet somehow she's the dem' frontrunner.
Once again, Americans complain about their problems and then vote in a president with a financial interest in making those problems worse.
