Is humanity doomed if we don't leave earth soon??

Some say that if we don't learn to colonize somewhere other than earth that eventually humanity risks extinction from one or more of the following:

A "dinosaur killer" meteorite/comet

Depeletion of resources

Pollution/destruction of our environment

Our own self destructive tendencies (war, etc.)

What do you think?

Why or why not?

How soon?

Do we have other problems (disease, hunger, etc.) we need to solve first before spending what limited resources we have on trying to leave earth?

Should we wait until our technology and living standard gets to the point where we can more easily afford to travel in space?

How about is the Earth doomed if humanity doesn't leave it soon???

There is not much that humanity can do with current technology that would doom the Earth per se. The Earth would survive and rebuilt itself with almost all scenarios except the worst, and those would probably require a concerted, coordinated and cooperative effort on the part of most humans (rather unlikely as we are not yet that cooperative).

Sure we could and do cause considerable harm to the earth, but if killed ourselves off, or even mostly killed ourselves off (say 99%), the Earth would eventually recover given a few million years without our presence. It has survived several "dino killers" to date, and evolution is a strong system - it has worked well so far.

Todd, with all due respect - don't tell me what I want or don't want - I asked didn't I? If you want to answer then answer, but don't hide behind a cop-out that you or the thred might get flamed. Just say it.

STG i think yes eventualy we will need to populate the moon and mars in domes or build space stations. but that won't be for many year to come. I've always belived the future will ened up more like it did in mad max movies then it will the star treck way.

the hellish will come first then the devine.
that's my opinion though, and i doubt any of us will be around to see eather of these futures.
