Is Chichen Itza worth it

I think it was.

I don't think there are too many clues just laying around...

;) ;)

If you're in the area, check out Xel Ha...

Not as much fun anymore since they no longer let you climb to the top and see the jaguar altar. Steps were tiny and there was a large link chain to hold onto so you didn't topple backwards.

It is an impressive structure but it's 90 minutes of bad road to get there.

Like AJ said, xel ha is a lot closer and is from the same era.

Looks like for kids?

If you had to choose? this or Ch. Itza?

No, it's for all ages and it is fascinating to snorkel and see all the colorful fish that live on the boundary of fresh and salt water...

It would be a tough choice. We were there for a week-long tournament, so we had time to take in all of the sites accessible from Cancun including a couple of cenotes. The eye-opener of the latter was the overwhelming poverty stretched along the sides of the road and then arriving at resort-like facilities...

Chichen Itza also has that "rollerball stadium" that is acoustically perfect (they demonstrate how talking in a normal voice at dead center of one rectangular end can be heard perfectly at the other end. They have tiny stone rings at the equivalent of the "50 yard line" and each time any team would score (putting a ball through the ring) they'd have a time out to have a bloody sacrifice of a slave from the opposing team.

See AJ? they had "sub humans" even back then!!

Anyone visited?

Is it impressive and inspiring?

Any cool clues there?

Yes.

I don't think they let you climb the temple pyramid anymore but the whole thing is just impressive on its scale and you kind of have to be there to be dwarfed by it.

I wouldn't bother with Tulum if I was going to chitzen Itza but I would definitely do xel ha.

It's alright but no match for Margaritas in a dive beach bar with a few Mexican cuties.

Exactly! And the Santa Rosa Wall is an easy nearby drift dive. Once you take the ferry over to Cozumel.

I was lucky enough to be able to climb the pyramid, but when I got to the top, my vertigo kicked in...

 :(

Yes. It doubles the length of your golden ages, plus it's cool.

You get dwarfed by dwarves

Same here. The wind was fierce, too.

I gathered some seeds from the Poinciana trees by the Temple of the Warriors and I plan to bring them home and plant them but when I got back to our hotel I saw that one of them had some kind of a boring crittter had attacked it and I was afraid I might bring home something that was going to devastate the local mesquite.

Hmmm.. Dunno... I have been to much more dwarfing and important sites... I'm wondering if this is worth the trip...

Anything else in that yucatan that's a must see or should i go to Iceland instead?

We've driven from the states to C.A. (Central America) a few times, hitting as many ruinas as possible. Copán in Honduras rocks. Tikal in Guatemala rocks. Tulum in Quintana Roo is incredible -- go on a Sunday afternoon. My partner loved Chicken Itch but I was too sick (lung infection) to tour. Palenque on the Yucatan side of Chiapas totally kicks ass.

But it's hard to beat Uxmal. Some will say Palenque is better but hey, they're different. Stay at the nearby highrise hotel so you can watch Uxmal day or night. Go for the son et lumiere show.

Then go peripatetic around the peninsula for a few days, all over the flatlands of Yucatan, Merida, Quintana Roo, and Chiapas states. Wander the paved back roads and hit all the little, unknown ruinas. Avoid crowds. Talk with the lonely caretakers. Beware that giant iguanas scrambling up pyramids don't knock loose rocks on you. Stay in cheap posadas (likely next to bus stations) in small towns. Eat stewed swamp creatures. Smoke Havana cigars.

If you don't like swamp creatures, head for Iceland. Have fun. Spend money.

Can't do all that. I'm going by boat.

But yea, surely much cheaper than Iceland.

I was impressed by the difference between the restored half of the steps and the unrestored back. A lot of work went into that.

The whole site is mind-boggling and knowing that as you peer off into the encroaching jungle that there is so much more there...

And EF, I've never been to Iceland, but the Yucatan is simply fascinating. It combines natural beauty and history.

Agreed that way. But thing is since its by boat I'd have a day off shore. I heard Iceland scenery by boat is nicer...

In Yucatan, I could rent a car at playa. I suppose drive to Cancun, Chicken Pizza, Tulum, etc. But would do only one :(

Hupoxia's Uxmal seems pretty cool. But it's a 4 hr drive from playa.

I would not drive.

PERIOD!

The ship should have packages that you can choose from. The Mexican police will not extort tour buses, but they will extort you.
