The IRS will waive $1 billion in penalties for people and firms owing back taxes for 2020 or 2021

I freaking hate, Hate, HATE THIS!
Look, I’ve lived in this country just like everyone else. I put my 1040ez in the mailbox on time. It’s not fair to me and the refund I get that the government can just come along giving this socialist handout, excusing the debt of lazy, non tax paying Americans.

Rarely do I post but I think I’ve found a subject that everyone here will agree with no matter your politics. We can’t let the IRS enable others not pulling their fair share with this free money giveaway. They’ll just take the money and do what anyway? Put into savings? Buy more stuff?

Really hoping the courts intervene to stop, but you can call your congressman and tell them you will refuse this.

Normally I kind of agree with most of what you post, but in this case I don't.

From the article:

"The IRS temporarily suspended mailing automated reminders to pay overdue tax bills during the pandemic, beginning in February 2022, and agency leadership says the pause in automated reminders is a reason behind the decision to forgive the failure-to-pay penalties"

I suspect somewhere in an internal policy buried in a dusty file drawer is some rule or regulation that says if the IRS is late, they can not penalise a person. I'm also pretty sure some derpy Lawyer like HisArpy might be aware of this, and would take it to court, and sadly win the case for his/her client.

I also read it is only the penalty, not the late tax they are forgiving, and I suspect that forgiveness period will have a grace period. Once it's up I am sure the IRS will once again penalise those tardy filers/payers.

I've always thought the government should offer a discount to filers who file on time. Say like 10% off whats owed, or a 10% bonus on the rebate. I think if they offered this type of incentive, people would be more receptive to filing on time.

Its a slippery slope. Waive tax penalties and before you know it, the government might start forgiving student loan debt.

I see what you did there…

😎

Now let’s see how many RWCJ "members" heed your call to vehemently oppose this travesty and to petition their congress members to intervene…

I think the courts should get involved as well…

👍

Fuzzy? Noooooooo, come back! I kid. I promise that there will be better subjects to disagree with me on than this. I’m for stronger unions, higher minimum wage, and free healthcare. Anything to level the playing field for the poor and middle class! I’m pointing out how people opposed to student loan forgiveness won’t complain about a tax exemption giveaway by the IRS. And yes, I’m stealing your 10% idea going forward because it’s a good one.

I'll admit that fucking Rooster of yours scares me a bit, how about going with Foghorn Leghorn?

I’ll see if I can find something more calming that’s representative of my state.

This would save my bacon. I owe on 22 and have been unemployed all of 23. Thanks, AI.
