I've got a first-generation 5 gig pod. I'm trying to extract the music files and copy to my computer, then put the files on a flash memory thing and move to my new PC. I can't do it directly because the old ipods use only firewire, not USB.

I enabled "disc use" and the copying onto the old computer seemed to go well. But when I tried to go from the flash onto the new computer, I got an error message and the file was empty when I looked at it.

What am I doing wrong?

I think there's a way you could do it via Itunes. I'm not quite sure you can use the Ipod and transfer music as if it were a simple flash drive, especially for music.
If you can install Itunes, then connect the Ipod, get Itunes to recognize it and all the music it has and copy it to your Itunes library. There is a way to then back up the whole library. I can be a little more precise when I know wha verion of Itunes you're using...
Hope this helps!

I think I have it figured out now.

For some reason, it would not let me drag and drop a whole folder. I'm doing it file by file.
