Iowa..... Rocks!!

My apologies as well. I should have posted a link to at least one article. How about the Des Moines Register?

They have links to both the summary and the complete 69-page decision.

Iowa has led the nation at times in the past as well. I'm a lifelong resident with a few escape attempts on my record. Rural Iowa can be a tough place to grow up gay, but then again... if you live your life according the The Golden Rule, most of the people that i know are just fine with you living the life you need to, even if they don't agree with everything that entails.

Live and Let Live.

Freaking WOW! I just finished reading both the Summary and the Decision.

Annie, I just gotta say that your Supremes truly DO rock! They took every single objection thown and shredded them. I'm exceptionally pleased that they didn't appear to leave even the tiniest loop hole.

The legislature has excluded a historically disfavored class of persons from a supremely important civil institution without a constitutionally sufficient justification. There is no material fact, genuinely in dispute, that can affect this determination.

Beautiful. Just beautiful! :rose: :rose: :rose:

Thanks, Safe!

There was no federal argument made so there is no way to advance this further. The decision belongs solely to the Iowa Supreme Court. I thought they did a brilliant job too, even going so far as to address religious issues and reassure people that churches do not have to open their doors to gay marriage when their belief system is against them.

There is still a lot of work to do in Iowa to protect the Supreme Courts decision. In, fact, i just got off the phone with the governor's office where i voiced my support for the decision this past Friday. Opposing groups are flooding the office with calls from outside the state. We need to energize our supportive side as well!

Iowans can decide every 10 years whether they want to call for a constitutional convention - a question that is already scheduled to be on the general election ballot in November 2010.

If voters decide by a simple majority to hold the convention and delegates agree on a marriage amendment, it could in theory be ready for Iowans to consider as early as a special election in 2011.

Ah, yes! The work has just begun!!!!

Gov. Chet Culver today indicated that he is unlikely to support a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in Iowa.

Culver's statement broke his silence about his position on the Iowa Supreme Court ruling issued Friday that allows same-sex marriage in Iowa.

“The Court also concluded that the denial of this right constitutes discrimination," Culver said. "Therefore, after careful consideration and a thorough reading of the Court’s decision, I am reluctant to support amending the Iowa Constitution to add a provision that our Supreme Court has said is unlawful and discriminatory.”

Culver’s statement notes his personal belief that marriage should be between one man and one woman.

He noted, however, that the court’s decision reaffirmed a church’s role to conduct their own religious marriages. He distinguished between a religious marriage and a civil marriage.

“The Court does not have, nor should any court ever have, that kind of power over our religious lives. Our churches and places of worship are free to decide for themselves, as they were before, who may enter the sacred covenant of marriage. As the Supreme Court’s decision states, ‘The sanctity of all religious marriages celebrated in the future will have the same meaning as those celebrated in the past,’ ” Culver said.

That's exactly as it should be. I have NO problem with churches deciding they will not support gay marriage. It's really all about the civil stuff.

Oh, and DC has announced that they will recognize all gay marriages performed elsewhere. They aren't a state, so this is the closest they can come to gay marriage; they also have domestic partnerships.

I completely agree. Churches should get to conduct themselves as they see fit. NOBODY has a right to tell them how to believe or what they do or do not support within the four walls of their place of worship.

HOWEVER (you hadda know this was coming), they need to extend the same consideration to us. When they start financial, politically and physically working to defeat / prevent civil gay marriage legislation & decisions then they are coming out of their churches and into my house and bedroom where they most certainly are NOT welcome.

I thought you guys might find this interesting/funny. For the record, I support same sex marriage. Let the fruits be fruitful and multiply. [bad joke]

Now THAT was a good response to that ad! The NOM ad has been all over the blogs and Twitter and everywhere and people keep riffing on it. But THAT was funny. Unfortunately I think a lot of people DO look at the NOM ad and say "yeah, right on" and take it to the voting booth, so I think it will end up being more dangerous than this guy is saying, but still...that was a FUNNY clip. Thanks!
